All-Purpose Cleaning/Disinfectant Spray- Fall 2008 Catalog

All-Purpose Cleaning/Disinfectant Spray

2 cups warm (tap water will work) water

1/4 cup Castile soap or 1 tsp all-natural dish soap

1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (Or cheap white vinegar)

20 drops or 1 Tbsp Tea Tree oil

10 drops Peppermint oil or Eucalyptus oil

5-10 drops Grapefruit Seed Crush

Combine together in a spray bottle, shake to mix. Spray surface lightly and polish dry with a soft cloth. Because of the concentration of this cleaner, you won’t need a lot to get the job done! Great in the bathroom for your sink or toilet. Also easy to use on kitchen counter tops and on vinyl or tile floor after pets or kid messes!

Warning: Test porous surfaces before using as the essential oils can possibly eat into unsealed surfaces.

This is a recipe used by Beeyoutiful Staff. Please feel free to alter it to fit your personal needs. Please note however, the Castile soap or natural dish soap is what emulsifies the essential oils and  keeps them from floating on the top in concentrated levels. We personally like using this homemade/cheap blend better than most commercial cleaners just for its effectiveness! Enjoy!

Lemon Blueberry Muffins- Fall 2008 Catalog

Lemon Blueberry Muffins

Makes 12 muffins

2 cups whole wheat pastry flour

2/3 cup Rapadura (dehydrated sugar cane juice)

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup lemon yogurt**

1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled (can use coconut oil)

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups fresh or thawed, drained frozen blueberries

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Butter 12 muffin cups. In a large bowl, stir together flour, Rapadura, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, stir together yogurt, butter, egg, lemon peel, and vanilla until blended. Make a well in center of dry ingredients; add yogurt mixture and stir just to combine. Stir in blueberries gently. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. Bake 20 – 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of one of the muffins comes out clean. Remove muffin tin to a wire rack. Let sit 5 minutes before removing muffins. Serve warm or cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature. These muffins freeze well (but there are never any left to freeze).

**I have used plain yogurt and added 1 tsp lemon juice and 1 additional tsp lemon zest and it works great.

Easy Prevention for a Difficult Men’s Problem

Two years ago, I turned half a century old. Our family celebration was thoroughly Cajun style: Blackened everything-streamers and balloons, over-the-hill signs, even a cake noir. My son presented me a pair of “old man” Velcro shoes while my sisters provided rotten false teeth and a cane. One especially caring card announced that the time had come for regular colonoscopies.

The significance of my age milestone was not lost on my wife. As I’ve come to realize about most loving wives and their husbands, she worries more about my health than I do. Not long after the party, she and I enjoyed some quiet moments one evening on our deck, reminiscing about backpacking trips through the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park two decades earlier. “You know,” Nancy spoke into the darkness, “your birthday cards joked about old man diseases, but you need to take good care of yourself so we’ll still be healthy enough for backpacking when we get the chance again.” Naturally, my first reaction was to point out that I’m still in much better shape than she is, so I’m not the one to worry about. But to leave it there only ignores a small part of me-and every aging male-that can cause big problems if not managed correctly.

GLAND AWARENESS

While men have carried a prostate gland around all their lives, most have little idea what it does for them-and arguably for their wives too. A walnut-sized gland situated just below the bladder, it wraps around the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of your body. You may have seen it diagrammed at some point as part of the male reproductive system, but as a back-stage player, its function is much less exciting than some other components in the array. It produces a fluid that is a major ingredient in semen while defending the genital and urinary tract against infection.

Great. So, the prostate is an unsung hero of things male. What’s that got to do with turning 50? When a man reaches middle age, his hormones change, causing the prostate gland to grow. And its proximity to the urethra can cause problems-kind of like a python causes problems for small animals. The expanding gland can constrict the urethra and make bad things happen like:

  • Frequent urge to urinate or the opposite-difficulty in doing so
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Dribbling of urine
  • Difficulty having an erection
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

These problems can be caused by prostate inflammation or infection (prostatitis), enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH), and/or cancer. Health-gloom-wise, prostate cancer is to men what breast cancer is to women. The second leading cause of cancer death in men, 90% of cases go undetected until it is untreatable and has spread to the lymph system (men don’t worry about their health, remember?).

This disaster is just waiting to happen in most grown males. By age 50, 35% have developed some cancer cells in the prostate. The result is that 97% of all men will be affected with some manner of prostate problem at some point in life. The typical solution is surgery. Yet even in successful cases the outcome can be, shall we say, unhappy.

The two big “I” words: Incontinence and Impotence happen every year to a strong contingent of the 400,000 American men who undergo prostate surgery. Unfortunately, the drugs most popular for treating the ailments are similarly ripe with dangerous side effects. But then, the alternative to treatment is pretty dangerous, too-lethal, in fact.

NEW TWIST ON AN OLD PRESCRIPTION

The discouraging facts about my future health compared to my wife’s could make a man my age wonder if thoughts of backpacking adventures to come are nothing more than pipe dreams. But taking care of the inner piping is possible.

While the prescription for good health is familiar-maintain an active lifestyle, eat a nutrient-rich diet, and take high quality supplements- there are a number of elements in this typical health recommendation that especially benefit prostate functioning.

Exercise

Sedentary men are 30% more likely to get prostate cancer and 40% more likely to have the non-cancerous condition, BPH. The same stats apply to highly stressed men. Both experience low levels of glutathione (an antioxidant produced inside the body and induced by exercise) in their cells, a situation that lessens resistance to cell and DNA damage.d3

Sitting for long periods also pinches nerves in the vertebrae that transmit messages from the brain to the prostate. This reduces the flow of fresh blood to the gland, allowing toxins to build up. Prostate- specific exercise can free up nerves and blood flow. And routine outdoor exercise adds a winning touch. Vitamin D, essential to prostate well-being, is manufactured naturally by the body when exposed to sunlight.

Diet

Foods rich in antioxidants-the cancer-fighting wonders found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables-are crucial. In addition, oysters and other shellfish, lamb, pumpkin seeds, and nutritional yeast contain zinc, an important mineral for prostate health and replacement of seminal fluid.

The Weston A. Price Foundation (an organization committed to education about natural, healthful eating) encourages the use of raw milk from grass-fed cows. It’s high in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) for powerful protection against cancer of all types. If raw milk is not available, whole (not low-fat) organic milk is a good second choice.

Excessive caffeine or alcohol should be avoided since these are immune suppressors. And contrary to politically correct dietitians, processed soy products have been linked to increased prostate cancer risk and should be avoided. Although soy manufacturers often brag that Asian men (who eat a lot of soy) demonstrate a low incidence of prostate cancer, they don’t point out that soy mostly consumed by Asians is fermented into healthful tempeh or miso-very different from the processed Americanized form. Regular consumption of meat substitutes, energy bars, and protein shakes made with soy can mean a person ingests 100 times the level of soy intake considered safe.

Supplements

A few supplements directly improve and maintain prostate functioning, but none better than Beeyoutiful’s Clinical Strength Prostate Health. As men age, the body’s ratio of estrogen (yes, the woman hormone!) to testosterone increases, but Prostate Health contains stinging nettle root extract to counter the effects of excess estrogen production. Many cheaper health products use only the stems and leaves, not the root of this herb, which renders it significantly less effective.clinical_strength_ph

Yet that’s only the beginning. The complete rundown on what Prostate Health delivers is impressive.

Saw palmetto supports normal urinary flow and calms inflammation. Berries from the saw palmetto plant, which grows in the southeastern U.S., are used to inhibit production of an unwanted form of testosterone suspected of contributing to enlargement of the prostate. “Bargain brands” use a powdered form of the plant which does not perform as well as berry-based formulations like Beeyoutiful’s. Prostate Health, in fact, contains an especially high percentage of healthful fatty acids in the form of serenoa repens. And while there is a downside effect of any saw palmetto-blocking the enzyme responsible for prostate enlargement causes another enzyme to kick into high gear and make estrogen-the stinging nettle root in Prostate Health counter-balances this tendency.

Pygeum, made from the bark of the pygeum tree-an evergreen found in the higher elevations of Africa and used by the natives for centuries for what they call “old man’s disease”-enhances the saw palmetto/stinging nettle combo, facilitating urination and helping the bladder empty completely.

Pumpkin seed oil is high in four free fatty acids and is now considered as vital to prostate health as lycopene.

Lycopene-the natural pigment that makes tomatoes red-has been shown to slow or even halt the growth of BPH.

Zinc offers an anti-bacterial effect to help stave off genito-urinary infections. (In prostatitis, zinc levels are only one-tenth of those in a normal prostate.) Men are more vulnerable than women to having low zinc because they lose that particular mineral in every ejaculation.

Vitamin B6 supplements the zinc and stinging nettle in regulating the enzyme which makes “bad testosterone.” B6 helps control inflammation of the bladder and counteracts the development of prostate tumors. Prostate Health offers all-in-one prostate protection. If someone you know isn’t taking it by the time he turns 50, add a bottle to the gag gift pile. The name will fit with one of the “kind” cards he’s certain to get, and the pills are just the color you’d want-basic black. This is one over-the-hill gift to keep on giving- and taking-so men can enjoy celebrating not only 50, but 60, 70, and beyond.

PROSTATE EXERCISE

Stand and take a few deep breaths. Exhale until all the air is gone from your lungs. Without breathing in, suck in your stomach, pulling it up as high as possible into your chest. Use hands to help lift it and squeeze your sides as well. This reverses the negative effects of gravity, which is constantly pulling down on your organs, with the prostate gland at the bottom of the heap. Feel the muscles in the lower back and side tighten. Then relax and inhale. After a minute or two, repeat.

If you notice any pain (very possibly your prostate), do this exercise 10 times throughout the day. You’re likely to feel some soreness after the first few sessions because toxic blood trapped in the prostate area is now moving out, irritating the surrounding tissues. Stick with it, and within days there should be only a feeling of relief and refreshment after exercising. Three to four sessions a day is good enough as a maintenance routine.

Essential Oils Heal the Body and Sooth the Mind

DSC07715_2

Our doctor was mystified twice over. First because he identified the painful rash on my ten-year-old daughter’s chest and neck as shingles-something only old folks are supposed to get. And second, the usually tenacious condition was already going away! “Whatever you’ve been putting on her, keep it up,” he ordered. I’d been slathering my daughter with tea tree oilfor a week. She healed quickly and bears only the slightest scars today.

More recently, a pre-teen foster daughter we hosted for six months routinely suffered emotional meltdowns because of a traumatic childhood. When I blended lavender with other essential oils for her to inhale during an “outbreak,” her mood calmed quickly.

Head lice plagued our friends with six children. Fearing the carcinogenic properties of over-the-counter head lice medicines, they treated everyone’s hair with tea tree oil. The family was quickly, and safely, lice-free.

Testimonies like these offer just a few reasons why I’ve kept essential oils in our medicine cabinet for more than ten years. Produced by the distilling of selected plants, pure essential oils offer potent healing assistance to the body and mind. Essential oils go a step further than regular herbs because they absorb directly into the bloodstream and trigger systems in the brain for emotional well-being.

When in Aroma, Enjoy What the Aromas Do

Perhaps you’ve heard of aromatherapy. While it’s become something of a buzzword, not everything that claims to have aromatherapy qualities actually does what only essential oils can. “Aromatherapy” lotions and candles sold next to pickled eggs and caffeine pills at gas station convenience stores seriously misuse the term just to make a sale. So do many air fresheners, cleaning products, and facial tissues. Most, if not all, of these products use chemical-based, synthetic oils which do not provide health benefits-they can actually be harmful.

True aromatherapy is provided only by pure essential oils. Although your nose may not readily detect the difference, when exposed to the real thing, your brain’s limbic system gears up to help you concentrate better, relax, or perk up your mood, depending on the particular oils you use. In the 14th century, during the Black Death plague, workers in the perfume industry showed a remarkable tendency not to get sick. They were in constant contact with essential oils, the primary source for scents at the time. Essential oils still do the job today.

Here are a few easy ways to capture the healing character of essential oils:

  • Rather than dosing your child with cough and cold medicines, fill a medium-size bowl with boiling water and add a couple of drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil. Let him/her breathe the healing vapors deep into the lungs.
  • Dilute the oils with a carrier like olive or sweet almond oil. Then rub a sick person’s chest, neck, and soles of their feet for an antibiotic effect against germs and viruses.
  • Add a drop of peppermint oil to a glass of water, and drink it to soothe indigestion and nausea.
  • A drop of oregano oil in water swished in the mouth and swallowed helps heal mouth ulcers and sore throats.

Many times, essential oils can be incorporated into things you do anyway, like bathing and washing your hair. Oils make your home smell fresh the healthy way instead of with chemicals. And you can massage sore muscles and tired backs with health-giving oils rather than cheap lotions. Or add essential oils to your natural cleaning and laundry products to give not only a nice smell, but also antibacterial and anti-fungal (mold!) protection.

Oils Take to the Air

One of the easiest and most effective ways to get the full advantage of aromatherapy is to use a diffuser. While you can always put a drop of essential oil on a tissue, cotton ball or even your pillowcase, a diffuser distributes oils through the air so the whole room is purified and every breath brings healing. Beeyoutiful now carries one of the best diffusers available. It works by nebulizing (breaking the oils into separate molecules) before dispersing them into the room. These smaller molecules are more readily absorbed by the lungs, making this the most therapeutic of the diffuser-styles.

Essential oils can be combined to create appealing and complex aromas for specific therapeutic uses. Blending with a targeted purpose is called essential oil synergy. Working together, oils heal more effectively than on their own. Tea tree and lavender oil are often paired, and there are many specific blend recipes available on the internet.

A Great Start with Oils

Since there are more than a hundred different essential oils, sorting through the nearly countless possibilities for using them can be overwhelming. To help with the selection, Beeyoutiful carries several champions of the essential oil line-up. Eucalyptus, known for opening up bronchial tubes and clearing stuffy noses, has been part of the Beeyoutiful product line almost since the company began. And this fall, four splendid, highly versatile oils have joined the team: lavender, oregano, peppermint, and tea tree oil. To help you maximize your aromatherapy experience, I’ve noted below a quick rundown of what to expect from each.

Lavender-think “fresh.” The purple, gently scented flowers grown in most herb gardens have been used throughout history as a natural antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-depressant, sedative, and de-toxifier. The name comes from the Latin word “lavare”, which means “to wash.” The fresh, clean fragrance is a reminder of lavender’s internal and emotional cleansing attributes. Lavender promotes healing and scar prevention after injury or burns. You’ll want to avoid the fake lavender fragrance now added to many baby skin care products. Use the real thing, and you’ll see your colicky, stressed-out baby relax. While you’re at it, try some on yourself after a rough day of mommy-ing. A lavender massage not only relieves sore muscles and arthritis pain but also menstrual cramps and discomfort from bladder infections. Skin problems like acne, eczema, wrinkles, and sunburn are soothed by lavender.

Oregano-the strong man. Used by folks as far back as the ancient Greeks, oregano is a potent antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic oil, a warrior against germs, Candida, and parasites which contribute to skin infections and digestive problems. Oregano strengthens the immune system. It’s safe for internal use and can zap a sore throat (including strep) in short order. Just gargle and swallow a few times a day for three days. Even the antibiotic-resistant staph. infection MRSA can be treated with oregano oil.

Peppermint-think “perky.” Besides the anti-nausea benefit noted earlier, cool, refreshing peppermint stimulates the mind, increasing mental agility and improving focus. Try peppermint aromatherapy when you’re working on taxes or some other tough project requiring concentration. If you’re feeling down and overwhelmed, a dab of this oil perks up your limbic system to keep you plugging away. Peppermint oil cools the skin, reducing redness and calming irritation and itchiness. Inside, it eases spastic colon and boosts the digestive system. Peppermint breaks up congestion pain from migraines, headaches, sinus, and chest congestion, too.

Tea tree oil-the jack-of-all-trades. This one works for most every sick bug and cleaning need you have. Just don’t swallow it. Made from a tree that grows only on the east coast of Australia, tea tree oil is antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal. Use it for first-aid on cuts, scrapes, and burns-and as a wart remover. Tea tree oil helps control problems as diverse as dandruff, head lice, vaginal yeast infections, jock itch, athlete’s foot, cold sores, and ringworm. And did I mention shingles-and its cousin, chicken pox? Inhaling tea tree oil vapors helps colds and bronchial distress. What’s more, bugs hate tea tree oil, so it makes a great repellent and treatment for insect bites. It even relieves itching caused by poison ivy. Add tea tree oil to your laundry to kill dust mites and for disinfection after sickness. For a great way to avoid toxic cleaners, use tea tree oil mixed with vinegar, borax, and water to get the same cleansing results, and add it straight in your dishwasher or garbage disposal.

The bottom line? For more healing, cleansing, and mind-soothing results than you can count, these oils are essential.

Facing a Heavy Situation – Fall 2008 Catalog

Dealing with Toxic Metals in Your Environment

This article is part 1 of Beeyoutiful’s 2-part series on heavy metal toxicity Part Two: Metal Urgency.

by Dr. Doty Murphy

Sheep fascinate me. But then, so do horses, cows, dogs, goats, and of course, people. Each living member of the animal kingdom represents a remarkable collection of miracles at work. A flock of lazy sheep grazing on a verdant meadow are there because the soft, green grass grew initially from countless hard, brown seeds. Inside the sheep, the grass becomes white bones, red blood, white, brown, black, or gray wool, green bile, and yellow fat. The amazing substances responsible for the orderly progression of these processes-from grass to wool-include enzymes.

Enzymes are delicate molecules designed to work optimally at a temperature (in humans) of 98.6° F. Without enzymes, plant and animal life cannot be maintained. Yet with normal operation of these molecules, life, health, reproduction, movement-even your thoughts-can occur. Your reading these words, your choosing and digesting foods, your moving or thinking or laughing all depend on critical enzymatic functions throughout your body. This proper functioning requires cofactors-minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, or lipids-or enzymatic function will be inhibited. In addition, if an enzyme encounters certain noxious or toxic materials, it may be damaged, destroyed, or inactivated. Such damage and destruction usually results in malfunction of the operating systems within cells, potentially causing cell death, premature aging, susceptibility to diseases, and ultimately, death of the organism. Among the toxic materials that can harm enzymes are what we call heavy metals.blossoms_2

Too Many Heavy Metals

With such high stakes, the presence of heavy metals in our environment poses a grave risk. Heavy metals include lead, mercury, cadmium, antimony, and aluminum. These substances threaten our enzymes- and as a result, life and optimal health. They exist throughout our environment. Wherever we live and breathe, drink or ingest them, heavy metals guarantee a negative impact on our individual and community well-being.

Historically, several heavy metals have impacted people, nations, and empires (through their damaged or destroyed enzymes). Much like us, the ancient Romans delighted in “progress” and comfort. They enjoyed piped-in water for their homes. Using lead for pipes, easy to form and connect, they achieved monumental advances in plumbing (not coincidentally, the atomic symbol for lead is Pb, based on the Latin word for lead). Unfortunately, this handy piping material insidiously released small but cumulative doses of lead each day. Through years of ingestion, lead impaired and even destroyed many of Rome’s political leaders, intelligentsia, and most grievously, the children of Rome. All these acquired enough lead to affect health and life, thinking and drive. Some historians suggest that lead pipes contributed significantly to the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

In modern times, lead found use in paints. Around the world, homeowners and landlords welcomed the beauty of lead-based paints. Sadly, children who innocently chewed on any lead-containing paint-whether on walls, baseboards, or sills-developed chronic lead poisoning with devastating long-term consequences: diminished intelligence, poor health, and even death.

Today, most governments ban lead-based paints for interior use. Unfortunately, some still allow (or ignore) the use of paint containing lead for toys and other objects. Playthings produced in China, for instance, heavily contaminated with lead, have damaged some of our children. Fortunately, the federal government has banned further importing of these products. Nevertheless, we may continue to be exposed to lead in other ways: automobile batteries, chemical and industrial waste, solder, and lead-based paint in older homes. Any lead exposure contributes to a toxic load for the exposed individual, making optimal health much more difficult to achieve and maintain. So, being aware of the sources of lead is a crucial first step in avoiding it debilitating effects.

The Special Threat from Mercury

Mercury, an extraordinary but dangerous metal, exists as a liquid rather than a solid at ambient temperatures. But mercury vapor (unseen and odorless) can enter the body through the lungs. Although the immune system quickly eliminates this toxin from the bloodstream, it is deposited in nerve tissue, bones, glandular organs, skin, and kidneys. Mercury retention in these areas damages many enzymes, and the effect is compounded with each additional exposure. Our bodies attempt to excrete the noxious mercury, but frequently the toxin inhibits or overwhelms the body’s defenses, thus preventing elimination. Scientists estimate that the half-life of mercury in humans from a single exposure is greater than 25 years! (“Half-life” is the time required to eliminate one-half of the mercury in that single exposure.)

A famous case from history, Sir Isaac Newton (of gravity fame) experimented with mercury substances. These experiments resulted in toxicity for him and caused not only his premature graying but also an extended period of unproductive mental illness. His illness finally resolved because the sickness required that he discontinue the experiments and hence, the exposure to mercury.

Researchers, physicians, and public health officials long failed to understand the full danger of mercury even though it had been known to damage kidney cells and impair proper functioning of that organ. For example, injecting a water-soluble form of mercury into the body provokes a significant increase in the volume of urine. This loss of body water produces a timely decrease in high blood pressure-a perceived benefit. Unfortunately, repeated use can also produce significant kidney damage, sometimes resulting in irreversible, permanent effects. Though no longer allowed in America today, mercury diuretics represented an important and integral part of a physician’s arsenal against hypertension as recently as the 1970’s.

Even until early in this century, mercury (in the form of Thimerasol, another water-soluble form of the metal) was the most commonly used preservative in childhood vaccines. Through multiple injections of mercury-containing vaccines, infants and children routinely received more mercury in 18 months than the Environmental Protection Agency allowed for adults working in factories or shops-and these vaccines were mainlined into infants and toddlers by injection! Such exposure had never been documented to be safe, and it likely produced damage to many developing organs and tissues. Great controversy still exists as to whether the spike in autism in the late 20th century resulted from this widespread, unwise use of mercury, particularly in toddlers who received the recommended multiple vaccines at age 15 to 18 months. It has been reported that our government actually permitted vaccine companies to deliver their already-produced, mercury-containing vaccines after the regulation forbidding use had been posted! What’s more, influenza vaccine, aimed primarily at adults, continued to contain Thimerasol for several years after mercury had been forbidden in pediatric vaccines.

A Deadly Mix

One significant source of continued mercury exposure in the United States involves the use of dental “amalgam” materials for fillings. Used in dentistry, an amalgam (mixture) involves silver, tin, mercury, and occasionally other metals, but mercury generally represents more than 50% of each. What makes this so serious is that no chemical reaction occurs when these amalgams are assembled. As a result, the toxic effects of mercury exposure are not minimized or eliminated.

Significant toxic effects have been documented from the mercury in dental amalgams. (Tin also has unwanted toxic effects that are not eliminated by its inclusion in amalgams.) Each time someone with mercury-containing fillings chews his or her food, grinds teeth, drinks hot or cold liquids, chews gum, etc., mercury vapor is released and absorbed into the body. Scandinavian studies have documented that the more numerous the amalgam surfaces in a mouth, the greater release and accumulation of mercury into the body. Such accumulation increases the risk for significant toxicity.

This health threat, long recognized and prohibited in some European countries and Japan, remains very real in the United States. Most dentists deny any risk, and many continue to place amalgams. But in so doing, they ignore the very real threat to their patients and to themselves! Dentists typically have higher levels of mercury in their organs at autopsy than the general population, and dentists have higher levels of mental illness, suicide, and psychiatric disease than other health professionals.

I’ve shared here just a few examples of heavy metal toxicity. Other significant exposures include cadmium in cigarette smoke, antimony as a flame retardant in children’s sleeping clothes, as well as bismuth, manganese, iron, copper, and aluminum.

Researchers have suggested that aluminum aggravates cross connections in the brain, perhaps inducing or worsening Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately, aluminum, existing in abundance on planet earth, has found widespread use in everything from cans to foil, from antiperspirants to antacids. There are ways around this dismal situation, and Beeyoutiful offers many products that can help. I’ll talk more about heavy metal avoidance and toxicity treatment next time.

Hormone Balance with Natural Progesterone Cream- Fall 2008 Catalog

by Maranatha Owens

BeeyoutifulBalance

Most women cringe when they hear words like “PMS”, “hot flash”, or “night-sweat”. These seemingly unavoidable conditions plague most women in America, some to the point of complete debilitation.

But what if it didn’t have to be that way? I was very amazed to learn that women in unindustrialized countries rarely face the supposedly “inevitable” symptoms commonly associated with PMS and Menopause. In fact, for most of these women, the transition through the “change of life” is pretty much seamless.

When I first began researching natural progesterone supplementation, I was quite in the dark. I was still years from experiencing menopause myself, and really hadn’t spoken to many menopausal women about what they were going through. So I immersed myself in books on the subject of natural hormone balance, and simultaneously began interrogating every woman I knew regarding their personal experiences. Many pieces of a puzzle started to come together in my mind. Almost without exception, every woman I spoke with complained of a multitude of symptoms ranging from uncomfortable to life-threatening. I also interviewed many young women in their 20’s and 30’s, only to find that they were dealing with a host of serious reproduction-related problems themselves. The symptoms were remarkably consistent from woman to woman, and as I read, it became clear that they all pointed to progesterone deficiency.

Who was Dr. Lee?

In my reading, I quickly stumbled upon Dr. John R. Lee’s books on natural hormone balance. He is hailed for his research on natural hormone balance, as well as spearheading natural progesterone supplementation therapy as a safe alternative to conventional HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), which has been proven to cause terrible side-effects and even cancer.

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance

The following is a list of symptoms that many women with hormonal imbalance experience. It is by no means comprehensive. Some women have a few of the symptoms, while others have many.

–         Autoimmune disorders such as lupus erythematosis and thyroiditis

–         Thyroid dysfunction

Do you know anyone with any of these symptoms? I think most of the women I know have at least some of these, including myself. I have always looked very young for my age, as do my mom and sister. I take good care of myself, drink a lot of water, and take fish oil, but lately I’ve been very bothered that the skin on my hands has begun to look extremely dry, thin, shrunken, and wrinkly. Natural hand creams didn’t seem to help. I found it interesting that that is one of the symptoms of progesterone deficiency.

What is Progesterone, anyway?

In a nutshell, progesterone is one of the primary reproductive hormones in the female body, followed by the estrogens and testosterone. Progesterone is necessary for conception as well as carrying a baby to term. In the ovaries, progesterone is the precursor of estrogen, testosterone, and other adrenal hormones, as well as steroids which are responsible for stress response, sugar and electrolyte balance, and blood sugar. This means that progesterone deficiency can cause a wide range of ailments, many of which seem unrelated to “reproductive” problems.

So why are women in industrialized countries susceptible to progesterone deficiency, while women in undeveloped countries are not?

There are several key reasons for this, most of which are found in our synthetic environment. Exposure to xenohormones, stress, eating soy products (knowingly or not), using hormonal contraception, chemical exposure in the womb, using HRT, and hysterectomy can all play into our imbalance. We’ll scratch the surface of these topics, and you can dig deeper on your own.

Xeno-what???

The term “xenohormone” and “xenoestrogen” refer to substances not found in nature that have hormonal effects. Most of us come in contact with these substances on a daily basis. “All xenohormones should be considered toxic; the majority of them have estrogenic effects on both male and female bodies,” say Dr. John R. Lee and Dr. Jesse Hanley in their book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause¹. The following list is also taken from their book. Comments in parentheses mine.

Common Sources of Xenohormones²

–  Solvents and adhesives (fingernail polish, superglue, contact cement, etc.)

–  Petrochemically derived pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides (On the grass, your apple, or the side of the road)

–  Car exhaust

–  Emulsifiers found in soaps and cosmetics

–  Nearly all plastics (Don’t we all store our food and water in plastic?)

–  Industrial waste such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) and dioxins

–  Meat from livestock fed estrogenic drugs to fatten them up (And dairy products)

–  Synthetic estrogens and progestins found in the urine of millions of women who take birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which is flushed down the toilet and eventually works its way into the food chain. (Yuck!!!)

What is Estrogen Dominance and what causes it?

Waaayyy too much Estrogen!

So what does estrogen dominance mean? It simply means that the body has too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. As Dr. Lee puts it, estrogen dominance “describes a condition where a woman can have deficient, normal, or excessive estrogen but have little or no progesterone to balance its effects in the body. Even a woman with low estrogen levels can have estrogen-dominance symptoms if she doesn’t have any progesterone.”³ Xenohormones which we are exposed to on a daily basis mimic estrogen in our bodies causing this serious imbalance. To top this off, many doctors prescribe women synthetic estrogen to deal with the symptoms of estrogen dominance, which leads to even worse estrogen dominance.

What’s wrong with not ovulating?

Estrogen dominance results in lack of ovulation. In short, after the egg, or ovum, is released at ovulation, the emptied follicle becomes the corpus luteum that makes progesterone. This is the primary way a woman produces progesterone. So if you don’t ovulate, your body won’t make progesterone in any significant quantity. It can appear as if you are having a normal menstrual cycle even though you haven’t ovulated, but the lack of progesterone can still cause symptoms associated with PMS, as well as making conception impossible. Even if one ovulatory cycle results in conception, the lack of progesterone in the body usually results in early miscarriage.
Remember: Pro-Gest-erone=good gestation.

STTRRRESSS!

Stress can also cause an anovulatory cycle (a cycle in which there is no ovulation). So can heavy exercise, serious illness, dieting, and extremely low calorie intake. Women who try juggling careers and family or have demanding or competitive jobs also tend to have anovulatory cycles. Sufficient sleep is absolutely essential to keep your body’s stress levels down!

Exposure to xenohormones in the womb

In addition, xenoestrogen exposure in the uterus can cause follicle failure for women later in life. This means that epidemic numbers of women are infertile because of the Windex, Miracle Gro, fingernail polish, and spray paints their mothers used while they were in the womb. It takes very little exposure to still experience the devastating effects of these powerful xenoestrogens. The reproductive organs of both boys and girls are extremely vulnerable to permanent damage while in the womb. What you can’t see can hurt you, and your unborn child!

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is also a common cause of estrogen dominance. Doctors convince women to have hysterectomies to deal with the symptoms of estrogen dominance. Unfortunately, conventional medicine compounds this problem by prescribing only estrogen and no progesterone (called unopposed estrogen) to these women. Many doctors lack proper education about the use of natural progesterone, as the pharmaceutical companies cannot patent, and therefore cannot capitalize on the prescription of these highly effective natural alternatives to conventional HRT. A sad but true fact is that pharmaceutical companies are the primary “educators” of our doctors, regarding the drugs that they sell. There is good reason that they don’t know about the natural, non-patentable, alternatives such as Natural Progesterone.

Hormonal Contraception

The majority of modern birth control methods contain synthetic hormones, or progestins, which are not the same as the progesterone produced by the body. These synthesized hormones have a long list of side-effects ranging from uncomfortable to life-threatening, including causing cancer. These man-made hormones fool the body into not cycling properly, and thus conception is avoided. Almost all contraceptive methods pushed on the public today contain hormones. Beware! Your body cannot remain in balance when inundated with such a barrage of hormones.

Did you say that I ate estrogen??

O.K. I think this one could be the hardest to avoid for some people. Did you know that soy is not really a food, but a drug? It is extremely high in estrogen, unless fermented. And the hard part is that soy is in just about everything, from baby formula to “health food” crackers and cereals, to fast food hamburgers and canned tuna fish. Just read the ingredient list on any “box” of food you buy. In addition to soy, many foods contain high concentrations of xenoestrogens from the pesticides and growth hormones used to produce them. The three foods highest in pesticide content, and thus highest in xenoestrogens, are milk, coffee, and meat.

Cholesterol – You Need It!

The body needs good cholesterol, such as that found in butter, coconut oil, fish oil, and extra virgin olive oil, to manufacture progesterone. If it doesn’t have this vital building block, it cannot build. In contrast, rancid or hydrogenated oils like margarine, corn oil, shortening, peanut oil, and MOST other commonly used oils interfere with thyroid and hormonal balance in every way conceivable.

Please, give me some hope!

So what hope to women have? In a society where xenoestrogens lurk around every corner, we can choose to make lifestyle changes to protect our own health and that of our families. Of course, there are some things that we can’t change, but many we can.

Positive changes you can make to benefit your hormonal health and that of your family

  • Avoid exposure to chemicals that you know are dangerous.
  • Make lifestyle changes that lessen your stress load. (Don’t starve yourself, exercise too much, or take on too many responsibilities that you don’t have to!)
  • Eat a nutritious whole foods diet and drink lots of water.
  • Don’t store or heat your food in plastic.
  • Consume healthy oils and fats such as coconut oil. Avoid hydrogenated oils at all costs!
  • Get plenty of sleep-the ultimate healer.
  • Avoid hormonal contraception and HRT like the plague.
  • Help bring hormonal balance through using a Natural Progesterone Cream.

What is Natural Progesterone?

Natural Progesterone is “bio-identical” to the progesterone produced by the human body. This means that the molecular structure of Natural Progesterone cannot be differentiated when compared to the molecular structure of the progesterone produced by the body. When applied properly, a good Natural Progesterone cream will give the body the physiologic amount of progesterone needed to help bring balance to the hormonal system. It offsets estrogen dominance, bringing relief to a multitude of ailments including PMS and symptoms commonly associated with Menopause.

What about Wild Yam?

Wild Yam has a long and well-documented history of helping women’s bodies to gain hormonal balance. It is especially good for cramping. While this is true, there is a great deal of confusion about the difference between progesterone and Wild Yam.

In volume 13 of Cancer Forum, Dr. Lee sheds light on the issue by explaining that “…in the body, we make (synthesize) progesterone form cholesterol. In the lab, the chemist makes (synthesizes) progesterone from diosgenin. This diosgenin from the wild yam-like the stigmasterol from soybeans-is actually a precursor of a number of hormones. Thus, with only slight modification it can be made to duplicate the progesterone molecule the body produces so that it can be fully utilized as needed.”† This CANNOT be done by the human body. If a woman is deficient in progesterone, Wild Yam may be useful, and may very well aid the body in gaining balance, but it is NOT progesterone, and cannot do what progesterone can do.

Creams are better than oral doses of progesterone

Progesterone absorbs rapidly through the skin, into the fat, and then into the bloodstream, while oral doses of progesterone have to filter through the liver, lessening the benefits exponentially. This means that a transdermal application takes much less actual progesterone to get the same benefits as a megadose taken orally. In addition, using a progesterone cream is much less burdensome on the liver.

Natural Progesterone is NOT a drug.

It is not a drug, like the many progestins pushed by pharmaceutical companies, and thus, cannot be patented. This is one reason why many women are unaware of its incredible benefits. As stated before, there is big money behind HRT drugs, and someone doesn’t want you to know that there’s something safe and much less expensive that might replace their drugs.

The following chart is taken from Raquel Martin’s book, The Estrogen Alternative: Natural Hormone Therapy with Botanical Progesterone.

Side-effects of Natural Progesterone

Natural Progesterone has very rare side effects, unlike its synthetic version. According to Dr. Lee, almost all side effects are caused by gross overdose or mixing other hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Some women report that they experience estrogen dominance symptoms for up to two weeks after starting to use Natural Progesterone Cream, caused by a sensitization of estrogen receptors. Breast tenderness is common, but temporary. If a menstruating woman takes natural progesterone out of phase with her cycle, it could change the timing of her period or cause some spotting. All in all, it is extremely rare for a woman to experience genuine side-effects from properly using Natural Progesterone.

As Dr. Lee repeats many times in his books, more is not better! Use common sense and follow Dr. Lee’s guidelines. If you do the math, a 2 oz. container should last between 2-3 months, depending of individual usage.

Not all Progesterone creams are created equal!

There are many “natural” progesterone creams on the market today, but the majority of these creams contain other chemicals as preservatives or for fragrance. Ironically, some of these chemicals act as xenoestrogens, sending confusing signals and causing further hormone imbalance to the body. Dr. John Lee recommends that a progesterone cream contain 900-1000mg. of USP progesterone (concentration is regulated by the United States Pharmacopoeia) per 2 oz. container. Many progesterone creams, or so-called “Wild Yam” creams on the market do not indicate how much actual progesterone is in their product, or use obscure language to cloud or confuse the reader. This is because USP progesterone is expensive. Make sure that the ingredient listing indicates exactly how many milligrams of USP progesterone are in each container.

Learn, learn, learn.

Educate yourself on the subject of hormone balance. I highly recommend that you read one of Dr. Lee’s books, or one of the other informative books available on the subject. They will help you to fine-tune your use of Natural Progesterone cream, bringing the best possible results for YOUR body. The scope of this article is extremely limited and is not meant to diagnose or cure your personal condition, but rather to educate and provide a jumping-off point for your own personal research and journey toward hormonal balance. Please don’t stop here. This is a fascinating subject!
