Troubleshooting Problem Skin: Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside

Beauty itself may only be skin deep, but the problems that reveal themselves on the surface often are not. They come from hidden places in the gut and become painful and impossible to ignore on our skin, yet most conventional treatments offer little hope, with words like “idiopathic” (of unknown cause), “lifelong and chronic,” and “no cure.”

If you’ve ever sought treatment for skin problems, you’ve likely been offered a steroid cream or ointment to help with discomfort but were given little actual help in curing the fundamental problem.

Don’t you wish sometimes you could discipline your skin or give it a bad performance review, and have it shape up, regain elasticity and be blemish free? Me too!

When I was younger, I was told my skin problems were just normal acne and that it would all clear up as I got older. I took comfort in that, because nothing the doctor gave me or that I found at the pharmacy ever seemed to do anything except make my skin crusty. Then instead of just having blemished skin, I had crusty, peeling, blemished skin. Ugh.

Well, I’m almost 40, and it is the rare day that I don’t have several spots on my face, some of them significant enough that high school tormentors would have termed them “headlights” or “third eye”. As motivated as I was to find something to help my own skin, that was nothing compared to when our sweet Elliot was born and struggled with skin and stomach issues from the very beginning.

My little baby eventually developed extreme eczema, to the point that his feet would crack and bleed when he walked. At times, he screamed for hours on end because of the discomfort. A doctor “assured” us this was “hopefully” just a childhood problem he would grow out of, but left open the dismal prospect that it could be a lifelong condition.

As instructed, we smothered the affected areas with an assortment of creams, all of which included petroleum or steroids, and none of which did a bit of good. Our child’s pain broke our hearts. For almost a year, my husband and I took turns sleeping on an air mattress by Elliot’s bed so we could press on his breakouts to help relieve the pain and “itchies” when he woke up in the night.

I became relentless in researching to find what we could do to get him lasting relief and healing.Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com

Gutting It Out

Studies show that many skin disorders are related primarily to the gut, based in food allergies or intolerances and/or poor digestion and bowel health. This is especially true for those whose bodies have significant yeast overgrowth. Common trigger foods for skin disruptions include corn, soy, dairy, and gluten.

When we discovered the skin-gut connection, we began to explore healing through adjustments in Elliot’s diet, removing trigger foods and augmenting his diet with gut-healing helpers like Tummy Tuneup and Digestive Enzymes at each meal. (I wish we’d had the chewable versions back then!)

Elliot took daily servings of coconut oil, and once he could swallow the necessary softgels, we gave him Yeast Assassin Lite as a gentle yeast cleanse. Finally, we started him on cod liver oil every day. At that point, not only did his symptoms disappear, but his skin became softer and less prone to itching.

Support the Liver

The liver is one of the primary organs in the body responsible for detoxification. The liver filters and removes cholesterol, fats, hormones, drugs, caffeine, alcohol, and other toxins from the body. Due to poor diet, sickness, and stress, sometimes the liver needs healing and restoration.

When the liver is taxed with high levels of hormones such as androgens or estrogens, too much alcohol or caffeine, or inflammatory byproducts from food, the overload can result in skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.

The good news is that you can improve the health of your liver! By helping the liver detoxify and heal, you can simultaneously detoxify the entire body and clear problem skin from the inside out.

Foods that can help increase liver function include beets, artichokes, garlic and onion, and all dark leafy green vegetables including kale, swiss chard, and spinach.  Specific herbs such as milk thistle and dandelion can also help support liver detoxification.

Silymarin is a unique flavonoid compound isolated from milk thistle; studies in the U.S. and abroad indicate that it can provide strong liver support in cases of liver compromise due to cirrhosis, hepatic diseases, and fatty buildup commonly associated with gall bladder and liver stones.

Beeyoutiful’s Silymarin Liver Support is a concentrated blend of herbs, including milk thistle and dandelion, specifically designed to offer powerful liver healing, cleansing, and rebuilding properties. Use it to support your liver and help heal your skin from the inside out at the same time!

Meanwhile, Back on the Surface

While the foods and supplements worked on Elliot’s insides, we’ll be forever grateful for the daily regimen of lotions, astringents, and essential oils that relieved his eczema from the outside! (I’ve also seen benefits in friends suffering with rosacea, psoriasis, and acne.)

Using natural treatments like these increased my peace of mind, knowing they didn’t add a toxic burden to Elliot’s already overtaxed system. When people lather up with chemically-based potions, they often pump toxins—such as fragrances, dyes, petroleum, and parabens—into an already stressed body.

Here are some all natural tools that can be helpful to calm, soothe, and encourage healing for even the most difficult of skin problems.

Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com (7)Blemish Bee Gone Astringents

All of Beeyoutiful’s astringents are handmade with organic or wild-crafted herbs, specifically formulated to address acne and other facial problems. They also work well on bug bites and flareups of eczema. We offer three formulas corresponding to specific skin types: normal, dry, or oily.

All three varieties of Blemish Bee Gone have a base of plantain, calendula, comfrey, rosemary, sage, thyme, and horsetail in alcohol and witch hazel, combined in varying proportions as appropriate to skin type. These herbs help moisturize while they promote healing of damaged skin, cell renewal, and tightening of pores. The herbs also ease itching associated with eczema and bug bites. We suggest applying in both morning and evening, but you can use them as needed for discomfort.

Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com (6)Laveshmint Daily Moisturizing Lotion

This lovely, light facial moisturizer has such a wonderful cooling and soothing sensation that it is my go-to daily lotion. It can be especially helpful for itchy, scaly skin associated with eczema and psoriasis, and also helps calm the flushing and breakouts in skin ailments like rosacea.

Aloe and coconut oil are the primary moisturizers in Laveshmint Lotion. Both offer healing properties ranging from antimicrobial effects to thoroughly nourishing the skin as it softens and hydrates.

In addition, the Lavender and Peppermint essential oils are tremendous for the skin! Peppermint’s cool, tingly, refreshing aroma enlivens the skin and stimulates blood flow while it soothes aggravated areas. Lavender does double duty by decreasing skin irritation, and its healing properties help restore the supple skin that should have been there to begin with.

Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com (5)Miracle Skin Salve

When a simple moisturizer isn’t enough, we reach for the miracle in a jar: Miracle Skin Salve. Like Laveshmint Lotion, it contains Coconut oil and Lavender, and adds other natural healing ingredients such as plantain, comfrey, propolis, and Rosemary Essential Oil.

Plantain has long been used as a natural and easy-to-find treatment for cuts, abrasions, and stings. It works well to heal and promote blood supply in affected areas. Comfrey has anti-inflammatory properties, and it supports the healing of cuts and abrasions. Propolis is well-known for helping skin problems ranging from acne to eczema to psoriasis.

Finally, Rosemary Essential Oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties which can be especially helpful with rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema, making Miracle Skin Salve live up to its name.

Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com (4)Bamboo Charcoal Unscented Soap and Charcoal Masks

I discovered with Elliot that it is immensely cool to a young boy to smear himself with black soap, but he had no clue that I did not choose the soap for its fun in the tub! It actually helps bind and cleanse the impurities expelled from the skin.

This can be especially helpful for those with blemishes and acne, because it serves to draw out toxins the skin is eliminating while reducing redness and swelling.

In addition to the Charcoal Soap, a charcoal mask can be used weekly to diminish acne and blackheads. Here’s a simple tutorial video that shows you exactly how to use it.

Charcoal Mask Recipe

Mix well, then apply to face (avoid eyes!). Allow to dry as long as desired, and then rinse with water. Wash with your favorite natural soap or cleanser (we like the Milk & Honey Facial Bar).

Use the herbal astringent of your choice and follow up with Laveshmint Daily Moisturizing Lotion. Dab problem areas with a small amount of Miracle Skin Salve to complete your routine.

Troubleshooting Problem Skin- Nourish Inside and Soothe Outside with Beeyoutiful.com (3)Like we learned with Elliot, the ultimate solution for skin disorders is to treat the internal causes. Reducing and soothing the external manifestations is important, too, as it can prevent complications such as infections from broken or irritated areas.

The goal in our family remains complete, deep healing, and attacking the inner problems from inside and out is the best way to bring back skin-deep beauty and gut-deep health.

Happy Healthy Faces

Between managing our diets and using many of the tools I’ve shared here, these days Elliott and I both are experiencing relief from our skin troubles. It fills my heart with joy to see his soft healthy skin, and for him to experience sleeping through the night without waking up in itching misery.

Do you struggle with a skin problem? Let us know if you could use some moral support as you work to discover how to encourage health and healing for your skin, from the inside out and the outside in. Interview and Giveaway: BirdProject Soaps

BirdProject Giveaway from Matter and Beeyoutiful.com

Congrats to Emily for winning the giveaway, and thanks to everyone for participating!

~~~~~
What does a charcoal-black soap have in common with environmental disaster? Read our interview with New Orleans designer and social entrepreneur Tippy Tippens to discover the connection! Then enter our giveaway to win a BirdProject soap for yourself.
~~~~~

Walk us through the step-by-step process that you went through to develop the BirdProject soaps. What inspired you, and what was the first thing you did to create it?

I was living in NYC & as I watched the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill unfold over the news for months without end in sight, I became more and more determined to find a way to help with cleanup. My background is in product design (having worked for 15 years designing furniture, graphics, lighting, and faucets for Kohler) and so I began with drawings of abstract bird shapes.

Tippy Tippens of MatterNOLA

Tippy Tippens of OurGoodsMatter.com

From the drawings, I then wanted to create something in 3D & I began modeling the shapes in clay. Initially, I wanted to carve them in stone, inspired by worry stones. But then I had the thought that if I cast them I could produce more quickly. Then the idea that these could be made of soap and sold to raise funding for cleanup popped up & things started to click.

From there, I scheduled a research trip to New Orleans, having never been before. During my visit, I wanted to ensure that I would design all of the details of the project thoughtfully and respectfully for the area. I didn’t know anyone in New Orleans, so asked friends who they knew there, did a lot of online research, set up many meetings for my visit & met so many wonderful people.

Before going, I knew that the soap should having something in the center as a symbol of hope in the end, but wasn’t sure yet what that should be. During this visit, I realized that it should be a smaller, white ceramic bird & also that the project should take place in New Orleans so that all of the benefits of the project would occur locally.

BirdProject Giveaway from Matter and Beeyoutiful.comI found Emily of Sweet Olive Soaps who was willing to try to make this crazy idea & I decided to make the ceramics at first as I didn’t find anyone immediately. I then decided to move to New Orleans and got my start on Kickstarter (you can take a peek at that video here). Now we’ve been making the soaps for over 4 years & have donated $23,000 to cleanup & restoration!

Explain the significance of the materials used in the product and why it matters to you where and how they are sourced.

Every detail is important and is thoughtfully selected to help tell the full story. The outer black bird’s material was selected to be soap as it is symbolic of washing from oiled to clean as you wash your hands. Also, this ties in with our mission of helping with the oil spill cleanup.

The ceramic bird at the center was chosen because ceramic is of the earth and the clay used is from the Gulf Area, so the keepsake of hope comes directly from this area.  All of the paper used in packaging (tissue & gift box) is 100% recycled; the gift boxes are also printed with soy-based inks and are letterpressed here in New Orleans.

Matter is committed to using 100% eco-friendly materials and to making our products with love in the U.S. Eco-friendly materials are important to us as they aren’t harmful to the environment, humans, or animals.

We are proud to work with local artisans and small manufacturers in the U.S. and are dedicated to this as it creates work for people here in the U.S. in our tough economy. It’s also better for our environment and helps to build new healthier, sustainable growth. We also source our eco-friendly materials as locally as possible.

The soaps are wonderful for your skin and made of biodiesel glycerin, activated black charcoal (from Beeyoutiful!), fair trade olive oil, organic aloe, and a heavenly rigaud cypress scent. They are great cleansers but also very moisturizing. I’ve been using the soap now for four years & don’t use hand lotion any longer as the soaps aren’t drying like many soaps can be.

Tell us about a challenging moment that made you wonder if this product and project would actually work.

Well, there have been many challenging moments to say the least; this is my first business and I am always learning. I received a lot of support from family, close friends, and most people that I shared with the idea with; everyone was very excited about it & that was certainly encouraging. Some were not supportive too, of course, but you can’t let that stop you!

BirdProject soaps from OurGoodsMatter.com

I remember sitting on my balcony midway during the Kickstarter campaign with a friend from Virginia who had come through town on the way to Texas. I remember thinking, okay, I’ve raised the funding for the first batch of soaps, then what? What if that’s it and that’s all that anybody wants? What if I completely changed my life, moved to a new city, spent savings, etc. etc. for something that is completely short lived?

I think that of course, you need to think on all sides, pro and con. What I do now for tough decision-making is write a simple pro & con list in spreadsheet form. It helps me to clearly see which is the best decision. At that time, for that decision, I felt determined to leap, to push, and to see what happens. I didn’t know the answer but I thought that I should just keep trying. I still find it so amazing and wonderful that we have been making BirdProject soaps now for over four years, since Dec. of 2010! Thanks to all of the wonderful people who have wanted them, thank you!

What prompted you to expand the product line beyond the original white bird?

In creating BirdProject, I found what I wanted to do with my life. I had wanted to start a design-based business for some time. I had freelanced, consulted, and worked as in-house designer for small firms and corporations, and hadn’t yet thought of what my business niche would be.

My goal for many years was to design products that are eco-friendly, and the market is slowly moving in this direction. In creating BirdProject and finding the world of social entrepreneurship, many things clicked for me. I realized that I could no longer wait for a ‘dream job’ where all of this would be possible, that I should create my own and use my skills for good.

I thought of the name ‘Matter’ and decided that I would continue to create eco-friendly products, in the U.S. and for elemental social and environmental problems. Now, each year we introduce at least two new products, thus far focusing on literacy, education, disaster relief, bee health, and wetland restoration.

Share about the cause that the BirdProject supports, and how the donations have made a difference. How does purchasing a soap contribute to both coastal recovery and sustainable local business?

BirdProject supports the Gulf Restoration Network & International Bird Rescue. To date we have given $23,000 to these awesome partner groups. GRN helps fight for a healthy gulf every day, both in legal battles and environmental monitoring. International Bird Rescue responds to oil spills globally. They traveled to the Gulf during the BP spill in 2010 and were the ones directly responsible for rehabilitating oiled birds. BirdProject also works with three amazing local artisans and makers: Emily Manger Davis of Sweet Olive Soap works, Jen Blanchard who creates the ceramics, and John Fitzgerald who letterpresses our gift boxes.

Thank you, Tippy, for sharing your time, warmth, and energy so generously with us! We’re delighted to be connected in a small way to the production of the BirdProject soaps!

3 Things That Banished Discomfort From My 4th Pregnancy, Part 1

3 Things That Banished Discomfort from My 4th Pregnancy

Thanks for joining us for Pregnancy Week! Start here with Part 1. Some of this information originally appeared in a slightly different format in our Winter 2011 catalog

After three pregnancies, each featuring quite a number of “pregnancy symptoms” and baby complications following the birth, I resigned myself to the idea that all my pregnancies would be difficult, and my health would never be great while expecting. I envied women who actually enjoyed pregnancy. Many feel wonderful and love every minute of it, but I had never experienced such a thing!
pregnancy

Throwing up was a way of life for me with most of my pregnancies, sometimes continuing the entire nine months. I was constipated, had blood sugar problems, anemia, backaches, swelling, you name it! Since I was convinced that a lot of my problems centered on nutrition, I decided to change my diet and be faithful with supplementation to see if my fourth pregnancy could be any better.

The first few weeks were still hard with plenty of tiredness, vomiting, migraines, and dizziness, but I stuck with my plan. Slowly I noticed a difference, and by week 15, I was actually starting to feel good. By 20 weeks, I consistently felt wonderful! For the first time ever, I was pregnant and felt fine at the same time.

Despite my success, I was quaking in my boots as I went for gestational diabetes and anemia checks around 30 weeks. I just knew some of my problem was “genetically me.” I’ve always battled hypoglycemia and anemia, so when my midwife took blood samples, we waited nervously as her machine ticked down the seconds. I almost fell off her couch when the results came back with textbook normal levels! As the weeks passed, I continued to feel fine, sleep well, and have fairly decent energy levels.

There were three things that I did differently this time around. Let’s look at the first one today in two parts, and the other two tomorrow.

#1a: Traditional Diet

In an earlier post, I recommended the Weston A. Price Foundation approach to a healthy diet as preparation for pregnancy: raw milk, farm fresh eggs, good fats (butter, animal fats, coconut oil, olive oil, cod liver oil), bone broths, lacto-fermented vegetables, and grass-fed meats and vegetables (see Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon for tips and recipes).

This plan has become the mainstay of eating for my family and me. I’ve also limited my intake of white flour, white sugar, empty calories, preservatives, and chemicals. Eating 2 tablespoons of coconut oil each day helped to decrease my cravings for carbohydrates and starches, and to maintain pregnancy-appropriate weight gain. My protein intake is 80-100g per day, spaced evenly throughout the day and making sure to have a healthy portion in the morning.

Protein is crucial to the development of your baby during pregnancy. Most people consume only about 35g per day; that level can sustain you and your baby, but it increases your risk for developing toxemia or pre-eclampsia.

Early on, it was sometimes a struggle to eat these things when I felt yucky; soda and a chocolate chip muffin sounded much better. But if I chose to have a bowl of bone broth, I would often start to feel normal again soon. Thankfully, as I entered my second trimester, I felt much better and was able to eat the suggested diet without problems.

Even the best diet often lacks key nutrients crucial for ourselves and our developing babies. Therefore, supplementation is essential, and I can only attempt to tell you what a difference it made in my fourth pregnancy. (My husband is also grateful for Beeyoutiful because supplements have meant he’s heard a lot less complaining on my part!)

#1b: Supplementation

Yesterday I posted about crucial supplements to take before pregnancy even begins. Many of them are the same that I recommend throughout pregnancy, with a few additions to keep on hand.

Red Raspberry Leaves and Evening Primrose Oil are both excellent hormonal supports during pregnancy, and they prepare the uterus and body for labor. I have read many different suggestions regarding when to start taking them; I suggest personal research and asking your midwife or health practitioner what is best for you. Each woman’s body and pregnancy is different, and unique needs should be specifically addressed.

Activated Charcoal was a lifesaver during pregnancy, for two specific reasons. A horrible stomach flu went through our family while on vacation; I immediately grabbed the charcoal and began regular doses. Although I typically catch any and all stomach viruses, it totally skipped me! It also greatly relieved my morning sickness and indigestion.

When I felt bad or had that acidy feeling in the pit of my stomach, I drank a slurry of Activated Charcoal powder. While I don’t mind the slurry’s taste and texture, others may prefer tablets or capsules. (NOTE: With regular use of charcoal for morning sickness, be sure to take either a mineral supplement or to mineralize your water because charcoal can decrease the minerals present in your intestines.)

Oh, what a comfort Pregnancy Tea has been to me! When I am not feeling well, have a lack of energy, feel extra emotional, cold, or just want to enjoy a cup of warm tea that’s good for me, I relish Pregnancy Tea. Its slightly spearmint flavor is quite a comfort when mixed with a little honey and sipped while I rest in my favorite rocking chair.

For those back aches or round ligament pains, Ow!-Ease is my favorite pain reducer. If occasional back or neck-aches creep up, Ow!-Ease delivers instant relief.

Join us again tomorrow when we’ll talk about the important roles that exercise and rest played in my pregnancy.

4 Natural Tools to Extinguish Pregnancy Heartburn

4 Natural Tools to Extinguish Heartburn

4 Natural Tools to Extinguish Heartburn Few things are more uncomfortable and dreaded in pregnancy than heartburn! I made this video when pregnant with our second, and these tips held true for me a year later through our third pregnancy.

Keep in mind that with heartburn, the motto “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is very true. Focusing primarily on the positive things you can do to prevent heartburn is better than trying to address it when you’re already miserable.

While my midwives were aware of my health history and were comfortable with me using these tools, please make sure to check with your pregnancy healthcare provider before making any dietary changes or adding supplements to your routine. Watch this 4-minute video and then read my summary below!

1)   Take Raw Apple Cider Vinegar on a daily basis. Use it in a salad dressing or drink it diluted in a glass of water. Kombucha or Water Kefir can also be helpful. Any raw, cultured foods can also make a huge difference as they add enzymes and good bacteria (probiotics), as well as other miscellaneous nutrients that support digestion.

2)    Digestive Enzymes. Chewables work well for some, but others benefit from more concentrated broad spectrum enzymes.

3)    Probiotics. Since the purpose in this context is not for gut rebuilding but to assist in keeping the stomach calm, make sure they are in a form that is accessible directly to the stomach and not prevented from this by enteric coating. If using Tummy Tuneup (or a similar enteric coated probiotic), be sure to put the powder directly in the mouth so it benefits the stomach.

4)    Activated Charcoal. This is not to be used as a preventative, but is useful as a tool to quickly quell a problem that may flare up despite preventative measures. This should NOT be taken on a daily basis for very long, as it will not only bind with the excess acid causing the heartburn but can also bind with minerals and other nutrients that you’d much rather stayed in your body.

With these tips, your chances of experiencing a heartburn-free pregnancy just went up!

6 Ways to Travel Well and Stay Well (Especially With Kids!)

6 WAYS TO TRAVEL WELL AND STAY WELL (ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS!)

Along with fun and excitement, traveling also brings a measure of stress on a body’s health and well being. It takes a toll with later nights, strange beds, hectic (yet fun!) schedules, and exposure to more people and places and thus more germs. There is nothing worse than being out of town and sick, except being out of town, sick and without your favorite supplies. It’s doubly awful if the ones who succumb are young children!6 WAYS TO TRAVEL WELL AND STAY WELL (ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS!)

Our family had a stomach bug catch us several years ago on the tail end of a long trip for my husband’s job. Having Tummy Tuneup, Activated Charcoal, Essential Oils, and Vitamin D on hand helped kept me from getting sick too, and we were able to get home quickly and recover.

Here are the strategies and items that I consider absolutely crucial in my family’s travel arsenal.

  1. When I get to our hotel room, I immediately plug in our diffuser. Optimally, I can add Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Bandito Blend into the Breeze and then we can go out for a couple of hours, giving the essential oils time to do their disinfecting jobs. But, since I have littles, I will usually turn instead to a child-friendly combination of Lemon, Spearmint, Tangerine and Thyme to diffuse. Those oils are less irritating to their little systems but still are effective at going after bacteria.
  2. I always bring a small travel size spray bottle. When I arrive, I add several drops of Spearmint, Thyme and Tangerine Essential Oils and then fill with water. I use this to wash down all the surfaces in the hotel. You can also pull down the beds and spray the mattresses, if necessary; just spray lightly and then allow to air dry. That, combined with diffusing into the air, will cleanse the room of the majority of potential threats.
  3. Before we go out in crowds, we prevent, prevent, prevent! If it’s summer, I usually skip the Vitamin D. But if it’s winter or we already seem a bit unwell, we dose up with Cod Liver Oil for extra Vitamin A and D. A dose of an elderberry syrup is next. And finally, we never travel without our probiotics! Our choice is usually Tummy Tuneup because it is easy to dose the little ones, and it’s shelf-stable so I don’t have to worry about keeping it refrigerated.
  4. In case our tummies go sour, we keep extra Tummy Tuneup, Activated Charcoal, and essential oils on hand. Our favorites are Spearmint (for anyone under 10), Peppermint, and Oregano, each well diluted in a carrier oil and massaged on the feet, lightly on the abdomen, and down the spine. We open a capsule and put Tummy Tuneup powder under the tongue. I use Charcoal to both treat and prevent the spread of upset stomachs; it’s highly absorbent and can quickly bind to toxins and move them out of the digestive system.
  5. If a nose is running, we dose up with our Berry Well and Vitamin D [LINK] and then keep a paper towel handy with a few drops of either Spearmint or Peppermint to assist in breathing. (I use Spearmint for children under ten and Peppermint for ten and over.) We also brew a big cup of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea to sip. All you need is your hotel room’s coffee maker and you are all set with hot water to make enough tea for everyone.
  6. Cuts and bruises! Busy travel days in unfamiliar environments can lead to more accidents and injuries than normal. I clean well with soapy water and then slather on some Miracle Skin Salve. For stings, bites, and sunburns, I bring along a baggie of dried Plantain (at home we often use the fresh leaves, but in urban areas it can be scarce or there is a possibility of pesticides). For fresh plantain, just chewing it up a bit and applying the crushed leaf to the sting or bites brings almost immediate relief. You do that with dried plantain as well, or you can make a poultice with hot water and the dried leaves.

While these items don’t chase away every chance of sickness, they do make any downtimes on trips a lot less stressful. Have we missed any of your favorite tips or products? We would love to hear your travel tips!

Stay Healthy Away From Home With Handy Travel Supplements

Stay Healthy Away From Home With Handy Travel Supplements from Beeyoutiful.com

Have you ever found yourself carefully packing your suitcase for a long overdue vacation and wondering which supplements you should bring along? Every time I travel, whether my destination is across oceans or across state lines, I always bring certain essential items along to keep my family healthy. My handy travel supplement kit includes Tummy Tune-Up, Activated Charcoal, Chew C, Digestive Enzymes, and Lavender Essential Oil.Stay Healthy Away From Home With Handy Travel Supplements from Beeyoutiful.com Tummy Tuneup is always in my kit because my entire family can use this gentle yet effective probiotic. I take it when I feel those uncomfortable gas bubbles pop up, and within a matter of minutes I feel better. My two year old takes it on a daily basis as part of her immune support. In fact, we traveled to Playa Del Carmen this summer and of all the children in our group, she was the only one who didn’t experience any digestive upset! I also open the capsules and give it to my newborn for colic, gas, and thrush. (Who wants to be on vacation and have thrush creep in? Not me!)

Activated Charcoal is another favorite soldier of mine. We use it all the time. Heartburn? No problem, have some charcoal! Stomach bug symptoms? No problem, have some charcoal! And the list goes on. It neutralizes excess stomach acid and absorbs toxins, stopping heartburn and other stomach issues in their tracks. It acts like a sponge, absorbing everything in its path as it goes through the digestive system. Use capsules for a mess-free option, or if you have the powder form in your kit, simply stir it into your favorite beverage. (Accidentally got into some poison ivy, or something more exotic? Apply a paste of charcoal and water to the skin to draw out toxins there, too.)

The next thing you need to throw in your suitcase is Chew C. I start taking it a few days before I leave for my trip, whether driving or flying. Travel causes stress on the body, leaving us susceptible to bacteria and viruses that in a well-rested situation the immune system might have fought off. Adding extra Vitamin C is an excellent way to boost your immune system, and Chew C tastes great for the whole family.

When I eat unfamiliar foods, as I often do on vacation, they aren’t always easy for me to digest. That’s why I added Digestive Enzymes to my arsenal. The enzymes help my body to break down the food I am eating for better absorption and less digestive distress. The high quantities of Cellulase and Protease help to maximize yeast cell wall digestion as an added bonus, keeping yeast overgrowth in check.

Lavender is one of the most used and best loved essential oils in history. It smells great and can be applied neat (without a carrier oil). I take it on every trip because of its antiseptic and antibiotic properties. On top of that, it can be used to relieve the itch of bug bites, help with relaxation, and soothe tired muscles. There are endless ways to use Lavender, so just go ahead and drop it in the bag too.

When you include these travel-friendly supplements in your bag, you can relax even more on your vacation knowing you conquered the most common travel ailments before you even left home.

What are your “can’t leave home without them” items? Have you used supplements while away from home? We’d love to hear about your travels!

Miracle Dust – Summer 2009 Catalog

Miracle Dust

By Stephanie Walker TallentSteph

Before marriage, I knew nothing about activated charcoal. When my husband Steve and I were first married, he had a big container of the loose, tarry-black and very messy looking powder in his bare bones of bachelor medicine cabinet. He mentioned that it was really great stuff. “Ick” was all I could think the first time I opened the container and tried to picture actually eating any of the grainy stuff. I had no way of knowing then that this amazing substance would earn my heartfelt respect and a permanent place of honor in our medicine cabinet for all time!charcoal powder

One particular event in our lives caused me to gain firsthand experience with activated charcoal. Until last summer I didn’t have a thing against spiders. As far as I was concerned, all spiders and I had a mutual contract. The terms of our agreement were that they stay out of my way and quietly eat flies, and I would not squish them. Live and let live. Spider Kind very nicely honored our unspoken understanding until that fateful summer day.

“Ouch” I thought, feeling a twinge on my leg as I got dressed one morning. “Wonder what that was?” Looking at my calf, I didn’t see anything and, after a quick brushing down just to make sure nothing was there, proceeded on with my day. Several hours later, I started to feel kind of odd, like I might be coming down with the flu. A bit later, I began to notice a rather dull ache in my calf. It finally bothered me enough to take a look. A raised pustule and a swollen area that looked like a huge fire ant bite explained the irritation. Puzzled, due to the fact that I had been nowhere near fire ants or any other biting bug, insect, or creepy crawly, I began searching the list of symptoms and pictures of bites.

A few websites and book resources later, I came to the unpleasant conclusion that I had been bitten by a spider, likely a Brown Recluse. After talking to a couple of medical professionals, it was explained to me that, since I had neither seen nor caught the horrible beast that had so generously decided to bestow it’s poison upon my leg, my treatment options at the ER would be limited. I learned that the poisons of the Brown Recluse and Black Widow are bacteria based venoms that rapidly erode skin (my skin in this case) and cause the classic “crater” sign of poisonous spider bites. There are anti-venoms for these spider’s bites but, without a positive identification, the ER would not be able to give me a specific anti-venom treatment because the risk for side effects was too great. All they would be able to do is administer a broad spectrum antibiotic.

After carefully weighing my options and taking into consideration that the bite was not near any major arteries or blood vessels (thus making it less likely for the poison to spread to the main parts of my body), I decided to try some treatments at home while carefully monitoring the situation. My ever helpful and wonderful husband Steve aided me in figuring out a treatment protocol. I immediately and aggressively started taking every immune boosting supplement Beeyoutiful carries and, in addition to that, added the following:

–  1 Clove of Raw Garlic, finely chopped (and eaten every hour to act as a powerful, natural, broad spectrum antibiotic)

–  1 Capsule or tablet of Activated Charcoal, taken internally to bind with the poison in my system as my body tried to flush it out (alternating times with the garlic and other supplements so that it did not bind with the supplements and render them less effective)

–    A straight essential oil blend applied directly to the bite every other hour (recipe in side bar)

–   Activated Charcoal paste/poultice applied every other hour, alternating with the essential oil so that the charcoal would not bind with the oil and make it less effective.

I was happy to discover that charcoal not only comes in the large loose quantities that are ideal for poultice making, but also in capsules and tablets, which makes it tremendously easier for those of us with texture sensitivities to swallow.

The following few days were very rough. I got as sick as I have ever gotten before in my life and ran a high fever for three days. The bite, however, never appeared to be infected and we carefully cleaned away the corroded tissue to help prevent any secondary infection. Never have I been more grateful for Steve and his calm helpfulness! From the pictures I could find, I knew that my bite was doing amazingly well compared to most that were treated the traditional way in the hospital. The erosion of the flesh was not nearly as severe as most Brown Recluse bites get.

On day four, my fever broke and I felt immensely better. The erosion of the skin stopped. Now, the only thing I have to remember the whole experience by is a small scar on my calf that looks as though I caught a stray BB. My brother assures me that it is a very cool look, like I might have been shot…even if it was by a BB. I choose to think of it as a trophy commemorating the first time I have been able to deal with a very serious health problem using exclusively all natural products and remedies at home.

A couple of months after my incident with a Brown Recluse, my brother-in-law Paul had the misfortune to encounter one as well. His bite was far more severe than mine and in a more dangerous location, near his femoral artery. This bite location put his whole body in great danger should the poison spread even one inch too far in the wrong direction. His wife, Steph, started putting recommended essential oils on it and, on the advice of his doctor, he immediately started taking a powerful antibiotic. Although this helped with his systemic reaction to the bite, it did not seem to help the actual bite location very much at all, and it continued to spread and deteriorate. Since Steve and I still had most of the natural supplies on hand with which to wage war on the venom, Paul’s wife Steph packed their family up and made the several hour trip to our house.

As we worked to formulate the oil mixtures and mix and prepare the poultices, Steph and I joked about opening an in-home Emergency Spider Treatment Facility. We set timers and were very careful to alternate his charcoal treatments, both internal and external, with the essential oils applications and his antibiotic and other internal immune boosting products.

Due to the very dark and very fine nature of activated charcoal powder, some warn that use of the charcoal with an injury or bite can permanently “tattoo” the damaged skin. The concern is that, as the wound heals, it traps some of the charcoal under the skin resulting in a darkish tint. This is something to keep in mind and an incentive to keep a wound well flushed out between charcoal poultice applications. I personally did not experience any charcoal tinting of my scar and neither did Paul. Even if we had, I would still feel that the risk of a slightly darker scar is very much worth the amazing benefits of using the activated charcoal.

Within 24 hours of starting the activated charcoal and essential oil treatment, the continued deterioration of Paul’s bite had halted, and by 48 hours, it looked incredibly better. Much of the inflammation and swelling had gone down and the necrosis of the flesh stopped. We marveled again at how phenomenally well and fast these amazing had products worked.

Inspired by our rather dramatic experiences, I was encouraged to start researching more about this marvelous substance. I found that activated charcoal is beneficial for a staggering array of ailments and maladies, both internally and externally. It is safe not only for very small children, but also animals. As I learned more, I became increasingly convinced that this is a product that no home should be without.

One of the recommendations I read was in regard to how effective it is for individuals who suffer with extremely severe acid reflux or other acid related stomach problems. The charcoal binds with the extra acid providing immediate relief when taken as needed. Intrigued by this information and wondering just how well it worked, all I needed was a guinea pig to try my new favorite product on. An ideal test subject presented itself in our Dr. Pepper loving, coffee drinking, severe acid reflux and bleeding-stomach-ulcer suffering cowboy friend. He was on two strong prescription medications to help with his acid problems, yet he still suffered on a regular basis from the symptoms. Some meals were pure misery for him, sometimes for hours afterward. Pretty much willing to try anything at that point, he was elated and not a little surprised by how rapidly the activated charcoal tablets neutralized and, in time, eliminated any after-mealtime acid related pain. He has let his prescriptions expire and keeps a bottle of activated charcoal on hand for any unexpected flare ups.

My husband Steve’s family has successfully used activated charcoal for years in treating stomach viruses, diarrhea and food poisoning. I found out that, because of its amazing ability to bind with such a broad spectrum of toxins and poisons activated charcoal is often used in Emergency Rooms if poisoning of some kind is suspected.

Even some of the most miserable side-effects from dietary cleanses can be mitigated with the internal use of activated charcoal. Richard Kaufman, PhD is a bio-nutritional chemist. He states, “Activated charcoal can be an effective adjunct to any regimen for the treatment of systemic Candida albicans infections.” The toxins produced by Candida, absorbed by the blood and carried throughout the body are effectively absorbed by charcoal. When, as a result of successful treatment of Candida Albicans overgrowth, there is a large die off of yeast cells, there can be a severe, short term aggravation of Candida symptoms due to the increased amount of toxins produced by the dying bacteria. Taking activated charcoal is one option for alleviating the symptoms of yeast die-off so that the cleanse can be continued and the individual not suffer.” Dr. Kauffman suggests 20-35 grams of activated charcoal a day in divided dosages on an empty stomach until the problem is eliminated. The larger amount should be taken for more severe situations. Activated charcoal should not be taken internally within 2 hours of supplements or medications.chklbook.img

An excellent resource on the subject is Charcoal Remedies: The Complete Handbook of Medicinal Charcoal and Its Applications, by John Dinsley. This is the most complete and thorough how-to guide for the safe and practical use of activated charcoal that I have been able to find anywhere. I suggest requesting it at your local library if they do not already have it or, if you find the information it contains as valuable as we have, purchasing a copy for yourself to have on hand.
