October 2015 Hobby Farm Update

hobby farm update from Beeyoutiful.com

We are busy preparing for fall and winter on the farm. The Ewings recently moved onto the farm property and having many hands available has allowed us to make light work of some projects.

We have taken out the summer garden and are using the remnants for seed storage. We have one more run of meat chickens and then our first round of turkeys to process. Also, on schedule for October is building our first hoop house, planting garlic and other winter hardy plants, and getting a few breeding rabbits as well.

Meet Beeyoutiful’s New Soap Maker!

We’re introducing several new soaps handcrafted for us by Lisa Dzimianski. Here’s the story of how she learned her skill.

20141117-lmd-03290In 1999 our family bought registered dairy goats in order to have our own milk source. The goats we fell in love with were an all-white breed of dairy goat called Saanens. They  just happened to be registered animals, so that fall (since we had learned how to show goats in 4-H) we decided to take our animals to the dairy goat show at a nearby fair.

At the end of the day, we came home with First Place ribbons in every showmanship class we had entered, and a Reserve Grand Champion ribbon in the conformation classes. With our success that day, the goat-showing bug bit. Over the next several years, we traveled all over the Southeast, showing our dairy goats at different fairs.  We also competed a couple of times at the national level in both youth events and goat conformation classes.

goats (1)When I was about sixteen, I wanted to find a way to make a little extra money doing something besides babysitting. That fall at a fair in Florida, I saw some of our friends who made and sold goat milk soap, and realized that was one way I could use the resources we had (goat milk) to make some income. I began studying the ins and outs of soap making (thanks to my sister, who had already purchased books on the subject and then decided not to pursue it), but it took me a couple of years before I actually got up the courage to try making soap. I also hesitated because I had to dish out money for the starting ingredients and equipment, plus find the ingredients I needed!

Finally, in 2008, I made my first batch of soap. It was different than the soap we were used to using (and my family made jokes about it being really slippery), but it was really moisturizing. That summer I made a few more batches for our family and got a little more comfortable with the process. The next year I began expanding my line up, perfecting my recipes, named my business, and learned more efficient methods of making soap. I also sold my first bars of soap that year.

The following year I began selling soap at a small local farmers market, and in 2012 I began selling goat milk soap at the Athens Farmers Market, the biggest market in our area. Since that time I have seen business growth and have found loyal customers who always come back to my products. I am grateful for the new opportunity this year to begin working with Steph (whom I’ve known nearly my whole life), Steve, and the rest of the Beeyoutiful team by producing goat milk soap for them.

One of my favorite things about soap making is the ability to control what goes into the soap (which eventually goes into the skin). I enjoy researching the benefits of different ingredients and how they affect the skin. I keep you, the consumer, in mind as I make my soaps; my goal is that you will find them to be products that meet your skin care needs!

Meet the Team: Toni Gatlin

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

It’s that time again to go behind the scenes and meet a member of the Beeyoutiful team. Today’s staff interview is with Toni Gatlin.

What are you in charge of at Beeyoutiful?

IMG_4701I’ve shared the job of customer service with Mary for the past two years, answering almost all the phone calls, so if you’ve called in, you have almost certainly heard my voice! You’ll also find me through our website’s live chat feature, or by contacting us through the website or by email.

We recently hired more help in the Customer Service department, so I’m not on the phones very often anymore. My responsibilities now revolve around content development, which means I manage the blog and edit all of our written content (such as email newsletters, product descriptions, and catalog articles) prior to publication, and I also manage our social media efforts. I’m tasked as well with overseeing our reseller program that helps get Beeyoutiful products into your local health-food store.

What do you do every day?

I answer your emails and oversee product reviews, and maintain our blog and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram). Most days, I work on some kind of writing or editing project that’s related to an upcoming blog post or sale announcement, as well as chipping away at bigger long-term projects like developing e-books or email subscription series.

What can customers count on you for?

I can be counted on to answer your emails quickly and with a smile, and to help with whatever our Beeyoutiful friends need, whether that’s to place an order or just ask about a product. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll track it down and get back in touch as soon as I find it out!

What do you do to support your own health?

beeyoutiful toni

It’s very important to me to support my body today, while I’m relatively young and healthy, so that I can maintain energy and strength for the future. I think of it as deciding now how I want to feel later when I’m 80 years old! Getting plenty of sleep and having regular gentle exercise really helps me feel my best, so those are high priorities in my schedule.

I have access to a wonderful year-round farmers market, so I try to eat fresh, local, whole foods as much as I can. I also make use of many Beeyoutiful supplements to keep my immune system strong and fill in any nutritional gaps. Some of my favorite products are ProMiSe Blend, our new liquid FolateLiquid Chlorophyll, and Digestive Enzymes and probiotics.

When you’re not working on Beeyoutiful projects, what’s one way that you enjoy spending your time?

When given half a chance, I’ll stick my nose in a book! I also spend a lot of time at my sewing machine. My newest creative hobby is leather working, which I’m enjoying very much. When I step away from my projects long enough to sit still for a while, sometimes I’ll doodle or color or do crossword puzzles while watching a movie with my husband.

You can see all of Toni’s posts on the Bee Blog here, and follow her on Instagram here, here, and here

August 2015 Hobby Farm Update

hobby farm update from Beeyoutiful.com

SO much has been going on at the farm! The garden has been producing nicely, the chickens are coming along and the weather is HOT!

Of course, life isn’t good without surprises. Last week when I got home from work, my wife was walking out to the field to check on the chickens. And what does she find instead? A calf! Apparently our youngest cow had been bred back in November of last year when she got out of our field and spent the week with our neighbor’s bull.

Without further ado, I give you…Baby Coco!

Meet the Team: Jeff Goss

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

Jeff Goss from Beeyoutiful.comWe’re always so glad to get to know our customers better, and learn a little about what’s important to you! We’d like to show you a bit of our own lives, too, and help you see what goes on behind the scenes at Beeyoutiful. Today you’ll get to meet our own Jeff Goss.

What are you in charge of at Beeyoutiful?

While I happen to get involved in a little bit of everything, my main focus lately is managing the website, our marketing emails, any photography/videography, and anything graphics related (Beeyoutiful Catalog, flyers, product labels, etc.)

What do you do every day?

On an average day here at the office, I’m usually working on emails, images, product labels, or putting out fires from something that has broken and causing an issue for customers. Pepper in some R&D for random things and you’ve got me covered.

What can customers count on you for?

I would say that customers can count on me mostly for keeping in working order any customer user interface. That would be making sure the website is in working order, email subscriptions and series are operational, and coupons and special offers are functioning.

What do you do to support your own health?

One major thing I’ve done recently (the last 1.5 years) is to try to reduce my sugar intake. I’ve supplemented all sodas (yes, even “good” sodas) with stevia drinks, which I make myself. My favorite is a homemade lemonade made with lemon juice and stevia. For some reason, lemon + stevia make a great combination, and actually tastes better (to me) than their sugary counterpart. That has been a major help with me in cutting back from sugar, as I was a big soda drinker.

Since I got married, we’ve also moved mostly organic with what we eat, including raising our own meat and dairy products.

Jeff Goss, the Hobby Farmer

When you’re not working on Beeyoutiful projects, what’s one way that you enjoy spending your time?

I play guitar and piano, so in some free time it is relaxing to sit back and make up some tunes. My wife and I run a hobby farm on our property, so “free” time if you will is also spent managing that, which is fun! Sometimes I jump on the tractor and cut grass just because… seriously. We also have two kids, so if you can say at all that there is free time, well the rest of it goes there. 🙂 Can I say we are blessed? Yes!

Meet the Beeyoutiful Team: Rosanna Hulson

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

We’re always so glad to get to know our customers better, and learn a little about what’s important to you! We’d like to show you a bit of our own lives, too, and help you see what goes on behind the scenes at Beeyoutiful. Today we’re talking with Rosanna Hulson, one of our newest team members!

Rosanna at workWhat are you in charge of at Beeyoutiful?

My job is super fun: I get to play with our makeupblog about our makeup, make videos about our makeup, and chat on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter about our makeup! Keep an eye out on Pinterest, I’ll be making some boards about our makeup, too!

What do you do every day?

I usually get up (that one’s tough), drink coffee, eat breakfast… oh you mean besides all the usual human stuff? To prep for blog posts and videos, I tinker around with the makeup, experimenting with techniques and creating new looks. I research of-the-moment looks on various makeup artist websites, and I talk to connections about their specific makeup needs and questions. I’m always keeping my eye out for new and innovative support products for our makeup line. I also contribute to the Beeyoutiful team by offering my opinion on various daily operations like planning sales, putting together various marketing strategies, and suggesting new makeup products.

What can customers count on you for?

I’m always up for a fun chat about makeup techniques or product questions!

Rosanna Hulson from BeeyoutifulSkin.comWhat do you do to support your own health?

I love to work out at our local YMCA, then spend some time in the soothing steam room afterward… no phones allowed! I also have a strict no-working-after-dinner policy, so that evening time is set aside for family time, connecting with my man, and recharging myself.

When you’re not working on Beeyoutiful projects, what’s one way that you enjoy spending your time?

My husband Rob and I have two busy little boys who are always moving and leaving a wake of destruction and joy in their path, so I’m usually playing with them and cleaning up after them. Jude is five-and-a-half, and Maxwell is three-and-a-half (the half is very important, don’t you know). When I’m not actively parenting them, I’m lying on the couch trying to get some of the aforementioned work done while I incubate our third little boy, Desmond. He’s due to join our family in October (hurry up, Autumn!).

Meet the Beeyoutiful Team: Tal Ewing

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

We’re always so glad to get to know our customers better, and learn a little about what’s important to you! We love to give you peeks behind the scenes here too. Today you’ll get to know Tal Ewing.

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

What are you in charge of at Beeyoutiful?

Working at a small business like Beeyoutiful means that we all make contributions to several areas of the business. I spend the majority of my time supervising the ordering, shipping, and receiving of all our products. I also produce our sales reports that let us know how our business is doing.Tal Ewing from Beeyoutiful.com

What do you do every day?

Every day is interesting here at Beeyoutiful. Some days you will find me talking to our manufacturers and staff about our products. Other days, I’m focused on creating reports that will help us keep up with the business side of things, or I’m helping our team plan our sales and marketing strategies. And every day, you will find me working with our team to troubleshoot problems that invariably pop up along the way.

What can customers count on you for?

My goal is to make sure that we make available the best products to our customers for the best price. If one of our products is ever out of stock, know that it simply means we can’t currently meet one of those criteria. Sometimes, a product is delayed because an essential ingredient didn’t pass our quality testing, and sometimes we have to discontinue a product for a time because it becomes too expensive for us and our customers.

What do you do to support your own health?

My main health struggle has always been my allergies, so I try to be proactive in keeping them under control. I try to take one of our BerryWell products at the first sign of an itchy throat or runny nose. I’m even learning to like some of the herbal teas that my wife Mary makes for me when I’m sick. I downed a ton of red raspberry tea this winter when I had a cold, and it helped tremendously. I also try to stay active by working in the yard or garden and chasing after the kids.Tal Ewing from Beeyoutiful.com

When you’re not working on Beeyoutiful projects, what’s one way that you enjoy spending your time?

I’m learning to farm. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I’m working at Beeyoutiful. We wanted to move to Centerville so that we could enjoy a simpler, rural life with and work with friends. So, along with our co-worker Jeff and his wife Michelle, Mary and I have helped create a garden and raise pastured chickens. We are even going to grow out a few turkeys for the holidays!

June 2015 Hobby Farm Update

hobby farm update from Beeyoutiful.com

So much green has happened since last month! We’re excited to see our seeds turn into plants. We consider ourselves amateurs, so when the plant actually looks like it should, it is time to celebrate! One of the Centerville locals laughed at us and said, “Yes, this is the fun part; just wait until you have buckets of produce to put up!” Well, we think that part sounds pretty fun too, especially with all the mouths we have to feed!

On Mother’s Day, we lost some of our meat chicks to a wild dog or coyote. It was a sad, sad day, but we did have a few survive and we have 100 more fluffy little peepers growing. We also have added adorable little bunnies to the mix of animals this month. For now they are used primarily for their awesome fertilizer-producing skills. Next month, we’re hoping to have pictures of harvest buckets and fully-grown birds!

Meet the Beeyoutiful Team: Steve Tallent

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.com

We love to learn more about what’s important to our Beeyoutiful and MoreThanAlive friends, and we like to bring you behind the scenes now and then too. Today we’re visiting with our CEO, Steve Tallent.

Meet the Team from Beeyoutiful.comWhat are you in charge of at Beeyoutiful?

I’m in charge of business development, finance, and elements of information technology. I am involved in a lot of other things, as you might imagine. I’m also in charge of pretty much anything that hasn’t been specifically assigned to someone else, at least until I can palm it off on somebody else!

What do you do every day?

I don’t think I ever really have a normal day. That’s nice, because I don’t get bored. Some days there are little emergencies to work on, a lot of stuff to review and there always seems to be a lot of research and testing to do. I keep telling myself I’m going to do more writing and occasionally I get ideas I want to work on, but there just don’t usually seem to be enough hours in the day.

Steve Tallent from Beeyoutiful.com

Steve Tallent from Beeyoutiful.com

What can customers count on you for?

Beeyoutiful customers can count on me to uphold the highest standards of quality and conduct.

What do you do to support your own health?
I take a LOT of different supplements when I start feeling sick. I regularly take a few supplements, especially in smoothies. I also eat a pretty clean diet, avoiding highly processed foods, most canned foods, high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, and MSG. We rarely eat out and almost never grab fast food. We eat a lot of whole foods. I exercise from time to time as well.

When you’re not working on Beeyoutiful projects, what’s one way that you enjoy spending your time?

The kids really like following me around and trying to participate when I do things around the house. They can pretty much be counted on to do something humorous, so that makes it a good time for me! I like playing basketball when I can, but due to age and schedule, just can’t play as often as I might otherwise like.
