Product Preference Confessions of a Beeyoutiful Lover

By Stephanie Kuvik TallentSteph J

One of the “perks” of working at Beeyoutiful is that employees have the blessing of experiencing the benefits of each product in Beeyoutiful’s incomparable lin-up and, for almost 3 years now, I’ve used just about everything. To choose favorites among these prized health helpers feels a bit like choosing a favorite among my kids but I confess: there are some “chosen ones” for me. Although I have a Top 20 list, I’ve narrowed it to five to share with you (maybe more next time).

Aroma-Pro Essential Oil Diffuser

Using the Aroma-Pro Essential Oil Diffuser, I “play” with the fragrances and scents I fill my home with almost daily. I might mix a little Orange Oil with a bit of lemon and eucalyptus and maybe a dash of peppermint to permeate my home with a citrusy-fresh fragrance that is also secretly killing germs. While I don’t see it happening, I know my friend, Aroma-Pro, microbializes each oil into the air, allowing it to do its own cleansing job. The oils remain in the air and kill germs for up to five or six hours after diffusion. Another huge plus: it is far more effective and natural than any germ-killing aerosol spray in the market. Oust and Lysol do not use up money from my grocery list—Whoohoo!

As part of my diffuser playtime, I also read about each oil-its particular properties and what it blends well with-and now I’m not afraid to mix a little of this and a few drops of that. (Beeyoutiful offers a great resource to help in your own adventure with essential oils. If you don’t already have a copy, order The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood. The book explores far more than just diffusing essentials oils and it has been an invaluable reference for me on more than one occasion. You’ll find it on page 14 of this catalog.)file_5_7

Aroma-Pro Essential Oil diffuser is a special blessing during the fall, winter and early spring months when colds, flu, and allergy irritants are rampant in the air. When we come home fro shopping, church, or the gym, I switch on the diffuser to kill germs or bacteria we may have brought home. As we go about our day-whether putting groceries away or taking a Sunday afternoon nap-we breathe in those marvelous, microbialized oils and rid ourselves of the yuck we brought home. When a cold or flu bug does grab hold despite our best efforts, I crank up the diffuser with oils that have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and disinfecting properties to help beat the bug as quickly as we can. I blend a few oils that are good for easing congestion and opening airways. And when pollen in the air causes sneezing and teary eyes, essential oils in the diffuser is my answer again.

[The Aroma-Pro Essential Oil diffuser can be found on pg.31 of this catalog. It is available for purchase by phone or mail order only.]

OwEaseinsideviewOw!-Ease

Most of the tears in our house come from one or both of our toddlers as they’ve learned to walk, run, jump, play, and -not so gracefully-fall down and bump something. But those tears dry up almost automatically when Mommy says, “Oh my, I bet that hurts. Do you need some cream on that?” We toddle off to the bathroom to smooth Ow!-Ease on the tear-inducing red mark. Just knowing Mommy is going to “fix it” with our amazing creams stops the tears and helps take the “ow” away.

I love Ow!-Ease, not just because it helps stop the tears but because it works. Arnica has been used since the 1500’s by both Europeans and Native Americans in salves, creams, liniments, ointments, and tinctures (as a base for poultices and compresses) to aid the healing of sprains and bruises, and to soothe aching muscles and relieve inflammation. Arnica, a perennial herb, is used mostly in topical treatments due to the toxicity of the plant and the serious side effects if taken interally.

Medicinal researchers have discovered that what makes arnica so effective is that it acts as a natural vasodilator to capillaries under the skin. Dilating the blood vessels relieves pressure on the injured area and speeds healing of bruises and sprains by allowing new blood cells to rush to the injured area. So when you apply an arnica salve directly to your skin, you cause blood vessels to open, help relieve inflammation, and aid in pain relief.

We use Ow!-Ease more than any other cream or salve. Its handy, gluestick-type container makes it simple to apply and you don’t get your fingers messy putting it on. My husband, Paul, treated a direct hit in the ankle by a softball within an hour of the injury, and the treated area never turned purple. Only the surrounding area, untreated skin changed color, and once he noticed the difference, he treated the discolored area as well. Ow!-Ease helped reduced the swelling, inflammation, redness, and bruising. What should have been a huge problem lingering for weeks healed within a matter of days!

I’ve used Ow!-Ease on glaring red stretch marks to help minimize their redness and visibility. With little people in the house, toys, are often in places they shouldn’t be (like in the middle of the floor), and I ‘ve tripped on my fair share. Like most moms, I often hurry through the house to discover the cause of the latest round of crying and all-too-frequently run into the corners of tables and counters on my way. I discover unsightly mega-bruises hours (sometimes days) later and wonder where they came from and why they hurt so much. Ow!-Ease rescues my sore spots, and it seems I use it on myself as often as I do the kids. [Ow!-Ease can be found on page 34 of this catalog.]

Soothe It! Aftershave SpraySootheIt

I love Soothe It! Because the fragrance, though designed for men, is so gentle I’ m comfortable using it myself. Its lemongrass and sage essential oils appeal to both genders.

I relish Soothe It on my legs after a shower and enjoy the smoothing and soothing from both the aloe and the essential oils. Soothe It acts like one of those expensive in-the-shower shaving conditioners except you spray on Soothe It after you get out. It’s satisfying to know the good feelings are also good for my skin and not full of petroleum and chemicals.

Soothe It is a refreshing astringent on my face after washing. It gives it that tight feeling without being drying and the aloe discouraging acne and blemishes as well. Soothe It is a special treat in the summer months because I tend to not need a moisturizer at all and just spritz and go. As with Beeyoutiful’s HairShine, Soothe It can be used as an after sun spray because of the cooling, soothing aloe. It’s such a multi-purpose spray I keep one in the bathroom, one on the dressing table in the master bedroom, and another in my travel toiletry bag. [You’ll find Soothe It! Aftershave Spray on page 34 of this catalog.]

Beeyoutiful BalanceBeeyoutifulBalance

I often reach for Beeyoutiful Balance, the bio-identical progesterone cream. After much reading and study, I realized I had most of the symptoms of progesterone deficiency and decided to try Beeyoutiful Balance. We ran a great article on the use of progesterone cream a few catalogs back, so I won’t go into great detail about this amazing product, But I want to share my favorite use.

While every woman’s experience will be different because no two people have the exact same body chemistry, my use of Beeyoutiful Balance has resulted in lessening mood swings, a more consistent cycle, an almost instant feeling of calmness after I first apply it, and with all of those changes in me, a much happier hubby! My greatest benefit has been that, at the very start of my cycle when those annoying, painful cramps hit, I reach for Beeyoutiful Balance, apply it once and, within a half hour cramps are gone. I can go about my day and minister to my family as usual. Although I used to use typical pain relievers, they were hard on my stomach. So Beeyoutiful Balance delivers double relief. The first time I used Beeyoutiful Balance to relieve cramps, I was proud of myself for having figured out a natural way to feel better during what for years had been an uncomfortable time.

[You can find Beeyoutiful Balance on page 17 of this catalog and the article “Hormone Balance with Natural Progesterone Cream” at www.beeyoutiful.com/articles.]

Peppermint Essential OilPeppermintEOil

It’s hard to pick a favorite essential oil when there are so many to choose from and all are so different in how they work and what ailment they help relieve. But I would have to say Beeyoutiful’s Peppermint Essential Oil is the one I reach for most frequently and as my universal, cure-all essential oil. Peppermint offers natural antiseptic properties and is a natural antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory, which makes it effective for many purposes.

Peppermint is typically known for relieving stomach indigestion and nausea so , instead of reaching for a piece of hard candy, we do things a bit differently at our house.

–          Hiccups. One drop of peppermint oil on the finger and into the roof of your mouth, quickly followed by a small glass of water helps relieve hiccups in about a minute (not recommended for small children as this can cause a burning sensation in the mouth.)

–          Fever. Especially for a small child or infant, mix a few drops of Peppermint Oil with Beeyoutiful’s Almond Oil and rub the mixture on the bottoms of the feet. (Almond helps the peppermint oil absorb more quickly than if used by itself and, as a carrier oil, it helps prevent burning of the skin.)

–          Bloating and gas. Particularly before bed when you just don’t feel right, a few drops of Peppermint Oil in the belly button should help with indigestion and aids in reducing bloating overnight.

–          Migraines. Peppermint Oil helps treat stress headaches and nausea. Rub a few drops of Peppermint Oil into your temples every few minutes while experiencing nausea or headache. You can also put a few drops into your belly button for nausea. Allow it to absorb, and then add a few more drops as needed. Apply it to your temples again when the oil does not appear glossy. That means it has absorbed into your skin and is working.

We also use Beeyoutiful’s Tummy Tuneup in conjunction with Peppermint Oil for nausea, heartburn, and indigestion. Both Peppermint Oil and Tummy Tuneup stay in the diaper bag so we have them for emergency situations when we are out. Head and tummy aches usually don’t get the better of us anymore.

Peppermint Oil is also an ingredient in my all-purpose household cleaning spray. Instead of other cleaners like Clorox Clean-up, I use it on the counters after cutting up chicken, on the kids’ high chairs after a meal, on the floor when a pet or child has made a mess, in the bathroom as my sink and toilet disinfecting spray, and so much more.

Ahh! I almost forgot to mention that I use Peppermint Oil in the Aroma-Pro Diffuser, too. I have to say, THAT is my favorite place to use it. I enjoy mixing it with just Eucalyptus Oil to help disinfect the air and kill germs, but a few drops of Peppermint Oil mixed in with a little of this and a little of that smells so good and…well, you get the idea. [Peppermint Oil can be found on page 29 of this catalog.]

I could keep going and share with you how I use more of Beeyoutiful’s many products, but the editorial police for this catalog limited me to just five. Come to think of it, that’s probably a good thing because I could share for hours (and pages!) how much I love all the many ways we use all-things-Beeyoutiful here in our home.

Pre-Pregnancy Preparation

For Mom’s to Be

266976_10100645769584420_903335_o

By Mary Ewing

When I married seven years ago, I was almost 26, and my husband and I knew we didn’t want to wait to have children. Although many women have children after thirty, we both wanted a large family and weren’t sure how long our “child-bearing years” would go on. Even so, we were slightly surprised when just six weeks after the wedding we found ourselves expecting our first child. Excitement filled our house! To add to our own joy, this would be the first grandchild for both his parents and mine.

At this time, I was a practicing registered nurse (I have since retired to be a mom). Although I did not work in obstetrics, I have always been fascinated with the study.  Yet despite the fact that I had scored a perfect 100 ranking among my peers that year in the OB/GYN nationals competencies. I understood little about the importance of preparing to be a mom. I knew I needed to take a prenatal vitamin once the pink line appeared on the pregnancy test. I knew the importance of Folic Acid. I knew I needed to generally take care of myself. But I did nothing to really prepare for pregnancy.

My pre-pregnancy diet consisted largely of fast food, meals from a box, and sodas. I had done nothing to eliminate my chronic gut problems, build nutritional storehouses, or make sure my body was in shape for the miraculous event. Due to work hours during pregnancy, my entire day’s nutrition consisted of an orange for breakfast, half a sub sandwich for lunch , and half for dinner (and when I say sub, I mean a foot-long white bread sandwich with nothing but processed cold cuts, American cheese and jalapeno peppers.) I washed that all down with the largest cherry limeade I could buy, because it had to last my entire shift-a healthier choice, I figured since it did not have caffeine. I often went an entire week without a real meat, fresh vegetable, and whole grains.

My bouts with morning sickness-to the point of throwing up-lasted from early in the pregnancy until three days after my baby was born. Along with my second pregnancy, came nine months of migraine headaches and then my son’s chronic health issues. I finally decided there had to be a better way to do pregnancy! The challenges have leg me to some fascinating ingredients that make for a healthier momma and, therefore, a healthier baby.

The 2-Way Gift of HealthMichelle

Our health is a gift, not just from the Creator, but also from our parents. The health of our parents when they brought us into the world plays a large role in determining what our level of health will be. Likewise, your health plays a major role in your children’s health.

People generally assume that most health issues depend on the genes we pass on-that they determine what makes us  more or less vulnerable to various diseases and health conditions. Typically, we do not make the connection that we directly pass on to our children a reflection of our own health. As a result, our children often suffer from the same digestive, immune, and chronic health issues that we do-not just because of genes but also because of how we care for ourselves. It should not be a surprise that your child is colicky if you have had problems with your digestion. So before you think about having a baby, you should first rebuild and restore your own health. Not only will you be passing on to them a head start in health, but the habits you develop will benefit them throughout life.

Getting Your Gift in Shape

The place to start building your health is with your diet-your nutritional lifestyle. Nutrients are the building blocks of cells, and it is vital to take in nutrients that build healthy cells. Diets full of healthy fats, grass-fed and organic proteins, fermented foods, properly prepared grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables are vital. While there are several very good diet suggestions out there, I recommend Diet for Pregnancy and Nursing Mothers (http://www.westonaprice.org/childrens-health/311-diet-for-pregnant-and-nursing-mothers.html) , published by the Weston A. Price Foundation. It offers great guidance for nourishing your body and preparing the inner stores necessary for pregnancy.

While most people recognize the need for protein, iron, and vitamins from fresh fruit and vegetables, it is only recently becoming known that healthy fats are needed as well. A British publication noted that for a healthy reproductive systems, a woman needs 25 to 30 percent body fat, and the American recommendation for women of child-bearing years is 21 to 33 percent. Healthy fats include coconut oil, whole milk, extra virgin olive oil, grass fed butter, avocados, and grass-fed meats (with healthy portions of the fat included). A great primer in the study of fats is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon (found on page 14).NourishingTrad_1

Just as important as what you put in your body, is what you don’t put in. Fats to avoid are shortening, margarine, vegetable oils like corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil and the like. Other no-no’s include artificial sweeteners, white sugar, white flour, MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, caffeine, and soft drinks (even cherry limeades!). Not only are they empty calories, they are often toxic to the body.file_5_11

Another crucial part of your lifestyle evaluation is your level of physical activity. At any time in life, exercise keeps the body feeling well, the joints moving, aches and pains dispelled, and there is an overall vitality. To “get in shape” for pregnancy, it’s important to incorporate into daily life activities and exercises that increase stamina, flexibility, and cardio function. If you’re wary of exercise because of pain, I recommend you read Pain Free (see page 14). I’ve followed its guidelines for almost a year now and have found incredible relief from aches and pains, while increasing my flexibility and balance.

When you exercise, it’s important that you not burn too much fat. High impact aerobics and long distance running often burn more than recommended amount of body fat for a healthy pregnancy. The key here is to research the regimen you will be participating in and maintain a level that’s right for you.

Our Food Doesn’t Always Cut It

Ideally, you would get all your nutrients from food, but that is just not possible these days with our nutritionally-depleted food supplies, busy lifestyles, and other deficiencies. That’s where the wonderful resources of Beeyoutiful are invaluable if you’re preparing for one of life’s greatest joys-and hardest tasks.supermom_superdad

Both parents should take a multivitamin derived from whole sources, easily absorbed, and one that works within the body to help build and restore. SuperMom and SuperDad are excellent multivitamins which also feature “bonus” nutrients such as spiralina and cholorella. Bear in mind, that dad contributes on the front end to the baby’s health, so he needs to take his vitamins to build his system as well.folicacid1_1

In addition to the multivitamin, Folic Acid is a must. A sufficient level of Folic Acid in both parents decreases the rate of several genetic problems including spina bifida and Down Syndrome. Although SuperMom and SuperDad offers 400 mcg of Folic Acid, most midwives and health practitioners advise 800 mcg per day for those anticipating pregnancy. For more on the benefits of Folic Acid in pre-natal care, check out Beeyoutiful’s Fall 2009 article “Pre-natal Peace of Mind” (available in the online archives at http://www.beeyoutiful.com/pre-natal-peace-of-mind).

To make sure your body can use the foods and supplements you’re giving it, you’ll need to do all you can to keep your digestive system working is best. Even if you are blessed with an iron-clad stomach, you have likely taken antibiotics sometime in your life or have been exposed to toxins that could wreak havoc on digestive flora. I’ve outlined below two key supplements to help build a strong digestive tract.tummy_tune_120_1

1.       Tummy Tuneup, taken daily, rebuilds good intestinal flora which will pass to the baby growing inside of you. It is also protecting against harmful bacteria. And a big plus I wish I had known during my first stomach-churning pregnancy: Daily use of probiotics can help decrease nausea while pregnant.

2.       Digestive Enzymes are crucial because enzymes are the tools your body uses to extract nutrients from food. Most people are deficient and unable to use well what their food offers. Without sufficient enzymes, many people experience fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, food cravings, and various stomach complaints. Eliminating these problems before pregnancy will help you feel better during pregnancy. And it will help maximize the “building blocks” or nutrients available to your child.DigestiveEnzymeWebProPillS

Cod Liver Oil, One of my new personal favorites. I wish I’d taken it prior to all my pregnancies, not just the current one. Cod Liver Oil provides the EPA and DHA required for proper brain development. I suggest using Rosita Extra Virgin Cod Liver Oil along with Organic 3 Extra Virgin Butter Oil because between the two you get Omega 3’s and good amounts of Vitamins A, D, and K. These three vitamins work together to help build strong bones, maintain the cardiovascular system, keep skin clear and healthy, balance the clotting in your blood, reduce the chance of diabetes, strengthen the immune system, and a myriad of other great things. Taking these vitamins in the form of Fermented Cod Liver Oil and Butter Oil helps you receive the greatest benefit. Since these are fat soluble vitamins, it is also crucial to take them with a meal containing a moderate amount of healthy fats.

RedRaspberryLeavesWebProPillS

Red Raspberry Leaves. This herb is invaluable to women of all ages, but specifically for pre-pregnancy, Red Raspberry Leaves are known to increase fertility in both men and women, prevent miscarriage and hemorrhage, and decrease morning sickness. Many midwives agree that Red Raspberry Leaves are safe to take throughout your pregnancy, but some advise against use during the first trimester, so (as always!) check with your preferred health care provider before continuing any supplement during your pregnancy.

A Matter of Timing

The plans I’ve shared here should be started six months to a year prior to pregnancy if at all possible. Certainly, if you are experiencing specific health concerns such as thyroid issues, extreme fatigue, chronic sinus problems, et al, it would be best to get control of them immediately-whether or not pregnancy seems to be in your future. Either by diet modification or through adding supplements or working with a naturopath: the more you work to restore your health now, the less work it will require to restore it in the future-and you’ll reduce the chances of passing on these problems to your children.

Whether your first or your tenth, pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in life! Every baby brings a wealth of expectations, joys, and new experiences. So as you contemplate bringing a life into this world, I hope you can learn a little from my bad choices and the subsequent better ones. For me, the most rewarding part of all has been my youngest child, who is by far healthier than my older two. We are so looking forward to our fourth addition in December and seeing firsthand how our hard work has paid off!

Swine Flu: Prevention and Treatment – Summer 2009 Catalog

By Jessica Carter and Stephanie Walker Tallent

Armed and Ready:

In the past few years we have been bombarded with news of some dangerous viral outbreak or another. Seeing images from around the world, images of civilians wearing masks to protect themselves and holding masks over the faces of the young, have become more common place. Perhaps you remember SARS and Avian Flu. Now the most recent strain of influenza A is H1N1, otherwise known as Swine Flu.

There is some alarm among experts that H1N1 could be “the one” that causes a pandemic in our generation. Regardless of whether it is Swine Flu or some media proclaimed super-scary flu of the future, the best defense is a good offense. We at Beeyoutiful firmly believe that it is the responsibility of individuals to educate themselves on how to best protect the health of their families. With that belief and goal in mind, we have researched extensively what tools are the very best to use to protect and defend against viral invaders.

How can a virus kill someone anyways?

Autopsis of victims of Avian Flu, SARS and the deadly Spanish Flu of 1918, which killed an estimated fifty million people, revealed evidence of destroyed respiratory tracts. This suggested that the flu victims had been killed by their own immune systems, not from the flu itself.

The immune system response suspected of being responsible for killing the victims is something called a cytokine storm. Cytokines are the type of white blood cell and are a normal and essential part of a healthy immune system. T1 cytokines are a particularly aggressive part of this segment of immune system super-heroes and typically are very crucial. Some viruses, such as Swine Flu, can cause these cells to over respond and the T1 cells actually become deadly to the body. Just as insulin is normally released in proportions to the amount of sugar intake, so cytokines normally respond in proportion to the assault on our bodies. However, just as the release of too much insulin in the body can result in death, so an overwhelming assault by T1 cytokines can cause the lungs to fill with fluid causing a person to drown.

What does this mean for me?

For those of us who are accustomed to reaching for the nearest available immune boosting super power when we come down with an illness, I have bad news. A lot of our traditional favorite supplements and herbs can potentially cause more harm than good when dealing with the risk of a cytokine storm. Little attention is given to the balance necessary between the T1 and other cytokine cells in order for our immune systems to operate safely. Since the T1 cells are more aggressive front runners than the other T cells, supplements that directly support their production are among the most popular for quick recoveries.

Champion among these treasured products is elderberry syrup, otherwise known as BerryWell for the Beeyoutiful fans. Several studies show a clearly documented connection between elderberry extract and rapid T1 cytokine production. This is part of what makes it so very effective as an immune-boosting preventative measure against viruses – it can stop the virus in its track before it takes hold. However, because of the concern of a cytokine storm, if one becomes ill with one of these dangerous viruses I do not personally recommend treating with BerryWell. My personal guideline for usage right now is two-fold:

1)      Take BerryWell liberally as a preventative every time myself or family members go out in public.

2)      Discontinue giving to any individual that exhibits symptoms and switch to other broader and safer immune boosting treatments.

Is anything safe to take or do we just take our chances?

The good news is that there are several powerful and effective products out there that are known for their support of balanced immune system production. This makes them not only safe to take, but also ideal aids for the body to prevent and even treat Swine Flu as well as other variants of flu. Below is a list of products I will personally be using as both a preventative and treatment should it be necessary.

The often overlooked anti-viral powerhouse: Vitamin Dd3

Although most of us realize that our bodies need this essential vitamin, it is one of the most under-acknowledged resources for combating viruses. There is an amazing body of documentation to prove its effectiveness not only in boosting the body’s ability to resist the flu, but also in powerfully treating it. It might just be the single most important supplement you can take to equip your body to face off with Swine Flu and walk away the victor.

If exposure to sunlight is limited, like during wintertime for example, 4,000-5,000 IU’s per day would be appropriate for most adults. If you weigh significantly more than the typical person, you may need to double that dose. For children the dose can be halved. For supplemental purposes, I would highly recommend using the D3 vs. the D2 form. D2 is the more common and readily available version but is not as easily activated within the body as D3 is. Vitamin D can be used therapeutically to treat the flu but it is also important to understand that, if you are taking the above doses of vitamin D, the chances of you getting the flu to begin with are very remote. The old saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” could not be more accurate regarding this treasure of a vitamin. The daily dose of vitamin D you would use to treat the flu would be 1,000 IU per pound of body weight (round down, not up). The dose would be taken once a day for no longer than three days (Note: This could be a very large dose if you are a large person.) This is the dose that Dr. John Cannell, the founder of the vitamin D Council, has been using very successfully for a number of years.

Dr. John Cannell documented his remarkable experiences with vitamin D and the Flu. He shared the story of how his patients, who were in the hospital ward of a maximum security prison for the criminally insane, were being supplemented with vitamin D and how they were able to avoid influenza when an epidemic broke out in the prison. Fascinated and intrigued, he subsequently put the vitamin to even more rigorous trials in the years to follow. His very lengthy and highly worthwhile article can be found here: http://www.medicalnewtoday.com/articles/51913.php

Vitamin D is especially valuable as a preventative and treatment for potentially deadly viruses because it supports a balanced immune system reaction and actually works to keep the cytokine T cells in balance with each other. This makes it particularly helpful when there is a risk of the T1 cytokine cells triggering a “storm.”

The indispensable foundation to a balanced immune system: Probiotics

Rapidly gaining recognition for their multi-faceted and universally beneficial properties, probiotics are considered absolutely essential in any immune system alliance. Most of us are familiar with these beneficial bacteria because they are found in yogurt. Cultures around the world have used these amazing “good” bacteria to culture, safely preserve and leaven a variety of foods and beverages like kefir, kimchee, kombucha, sourdough bread and sauerkraut. Probiotics are the cornerstone of a healthy gut and, subsequently, of a healthy immune system.probiotics

Although one can find a limited amount of this bacteria in commercially manufactured yogurt, it does not contain enough strains or enough live bacteria to patrol the yards and yards of digestive tract and war with any offensive bacteria found there. Since most of us have not grown up with a lifetime of eating live cultured foods, we need a more powerful and immediate source. Probiotics are readily available these days in wider varieties than ever before. They come in tabs, chews, loose powder, regular capsules and enteric-coated capsules (a special protective coating on the capsule to get it through the damaging stomach acids and into the gut, safe and sound). They can be found in single strains, like Acidophilus, and multiple strains from a variety of sources. When taking a probiotic supplement, always determine the minimum guaranteed bacteria count, as well as the recommended storage instructions.

Tummy Tuneup is an enteric coated 8 strain probiotic available through Beeyoutiful. It has proven itself again and again to our staff and customers. Tummy Tuneup is an ideal choice for delivering the maximum benefit to the gut. Another Beeyoutiful product, Ultimate Defense, has a large variety of bacteria and is very beneficial to take on a daily basis, or specifically as a preventative gut-based immune booster.

Here is a quote from a study illustrating how probiotics aid in inflammation control and a balanced, healthy immune response.

From the Study:

Probiotics are dietary supplements known to reduce or alter inflammation and inflammatory cytokines. Histological analysis revealed that edema, inflammation and vacuolization as well as polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration in the lung tissue was significantly reduced in the probiotic treated group. Bacterial translocation was significantly reduced in the probiotic treated group compared with the other groups. As a result of this, reduced proinflammatory cytokines and systemic inflammatory response was observed.

Vital life force: ColostrumColostromTransferFactorWebProPillS

Colostrum is the super nutrient-dense, pre-milk substance that mammals produce for their young before a normal milk supply sets in. Few things in nature are known to have such amazing life sustaining properties and seemingly magical immune building properties as colostrum.

When dealing with these potentially deadly flus, it is important to insure that the balance of T2 cells will be produced in proportion to, if not in excess of, the T1 cells while the immune system is attacking the offending virus. Studies show that nothing does this better than colostrum. Researchers in Australia set out to learn if dried bovine colostrum protein (a popular supplement with athletes) had the same ability to stimulate cytokine white blood cells in humans that the fresh colostrum does in cows. In the study, researchers saw that the T2 “retreat” cytokines were activated and the T1 “attack” cytokines were suppressed when measured 6 hours after administration.

Multiple studies show colostrum to be an incredibly vital product to have on hand if there is any danger of a cytokine storm related illness. It has no known side effects and is very safe for even small children (capsules of the dried powder can be opened into food or drinks).

Healer from the inside out: Aloe Veraaloe vera

Many of us know of aloe’s healing properties having used it by slapping a fresh cut of aloe leaf on sunburns and feeling the instant relief. Aloe is also an amazing miracle worker and support for the body from the inside out. Aloe Vera is chock full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and micronutrients that can help the immune system to be strong and resilient against infection. Consuming Aloe Vera on a regular basis provides your immune system with the extra boost of nutrients it needs in order to perform at a superior level. It also provides you with antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial protection. Aloe Vera is known for its synergistic properties, meaning all of the nutrients it contains work together to bring about the desired result of a strong and balanced immune system response. What makes aloe particularly good to take in an antiviral regimen is that it, like colostrum, directly supports a balanced and therefore safer immune system response.

Beeyoutiful carries Aloe in concentrated form in gel capsules. Aloe is safe for children to take and the capsules can be cut open and squeezed into yogurt or a smoothie. Excess Aloe Vera can cause diarrhea, so if this occurs simply reduce the quantity or frequency.

The all powerful: Garlicodorlessgarlicweb

Perhaps no plant has been more treasured throughout history for its incredible flavor and culinary contributions than garlic. As anybody who has eaten a clove of raw garlic will tell you, there are few things that come close to the incredibly powerful and pungent flavor of garlic. This little powerhouse has also been documented to have antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties and has been used medicinally for thousands of years in many countries around the world.

Several studies have shown that high doses of garlic help to regulate cytokine response. What constitutes a high dose is difficult to define because garlic potency varies from one variety to another, from one region of the country to another, and from one harvest to another.

If your stomach and taste buds can tolerate it, the most beneficial way to utilize garlic is to eat it raw, ideally from an organic or all-natural, pesticide-free source. For those of us that prefer a supplement to a burning tongue and watering eyes, there is good news. Allicin is a component of crushed/raw garlic that is considered incredibly beneficial but is also highly unstable. For years the only way to get it was by eating fresh, crushed garlic. However, a couple of years ago they figured out a way to stabilize allicin so that it could finally be offered in a supplemental form. Although garlic in just about any form will be beneficial in some way to your body, if you can find a stabilized allicin source I highly recommend it.

Beeyoutiful carries an aged 100:1 potency odorless garlic product that has been used with great success by our customers and staff. An added bonus to odorless garlic is that you don’t have people crinkling their noses as you walk by or spouses refusing to share bed space with you due to the aromatic fumes wafting from your pores.

Fresh garlic can be a challenge to get into small children orally and the gel capsules are not much better. For babies or small children, I highly recommend a garlic poultice as an effective way to get the benefits of garlic into small people’s bodies (see side bare for instructions).

A note of caution before consuming gigantic quantities of garlic: There is risk that, if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, very VERY large amounts of garlic could exacerbate the problem or cause some drug interactions. Individuals on blood thinners should be especially aware of this concern.
