Makeup Monday, The Necessary Neutrals: Shimmery Silver

#MakeupMonday, the Necessary Neutrals- Shimmery Silver

Silver can be a bit tricky to wear, because if you just slap on one bright shade and call it good, you can end up looking like you’re wearing fishing lures on your eyes. Not exactly the look most of us are going for, I’d imagine!

The key to wearing silver shadow well is to layer a brighter silver with a deeper, more muted pewter to give contour and nuance to your look. It’s not as complicated as you might think!

Follow along with my tutorial and you’ll get a subtly shimmery silver look that can be tailored for daytime or evening.#MakeupMonday, the Necessary Neutrals- Shimmery Silver

You will need:

Let’s get started!

Grab your Small All-Over Brush and Matte White Base; stamp the shadow up underneath your brows and just down to your crease area to highlight your brow bone. I prefer using our Matte White Base over the more shimmery white shadows we carry because I think the matte (non-shimmery) finish balances out the glitzy silver we’re about to use.

Now, after wiping your Small All-Over Brush on a clean, dry cloth, dip it into Deep Silver and stamp it all over your lid, from the crease to the lashes.

Next, define your crease and add depth by swirling Slate Blue into your crease with the Pointed Sculptor Brush, starting at your outer corner and working inward, getting lighter as you go. Mirror this progression on your lower lid by using the Smudger Brush with Matte White on the inner corner, Deep Silver in the center, and Slate Blue on the outer corner of your lower lash line.

Finish the look off with Matte Black Eyeliner (dry for a smoky look, liquid for a sharp, dramatic look) and a few coats of your favorite mascara.

To balance the cool tones of this silver eye look, choose a warm-toned blush such as Cherry Bloom or Warm Rose. Keep your lips neutral for the most sophisticated vibe.

Makeup Monday, The Necessary Neutrals: Cool Mattes

#MakeupMonday- Necessary Neutrals (Cool Mattes) from BeeyoutifulSkin.com

It’s super fun to jazz up your makeup routine with splashy colors and dramatic looks, but let’s be honest, on a daily basis most of us reach for the neutral look that we know works. It matches everything, is basic without being boring, and is a comfortable no-brainer when you just want to look “done”, but not glammed up.

What I love about matte shadows is that they can be dressed up with minimal effort when the occasion calls for it, but they never look overdone.

#MakeupMonday, Necessary Neutrals: Cool MattesNeutral eye shadows are basically like your best pair of jeans: you can cuff them and wear them with flip-flops and a basic white tee for taking the kids to the park, or you can pair them with a swanky top and heels for a night out on the town.

The right combo of neutral eye shadows kinda do the same thing for your eyes! You can dash them on lightly in 5 minutes and you’re instantly pulled together for anything your day throws at you, or you can build the richness and depth of the velvety color for a more glamorous and sophisticated special event look. Either way, neutral eye shadows are a staple in any woman’s makeup bag!

Last week we put together a warm-toned neutral look, and today we’re focusing on a cool color combination. Here’s what you’ll need:

Start with Matte White Base and apply it with your Small All-Over Brush from your brow bone to your lash line. Take care that you apply it very lightly, otherwise you’ll end up with chalky white lids, which is not exactly the look we’re going for here. Think light and bright.

Then use your Angled Crease Brush and dip up a bit of Lavender Shale, applying it lightly to your crease area. You can build drama and intensity at this point if you like, or you can leave it light; just enough to define your crease. Be sure to blend this really well; you want to make it look like a fluffy storm cloud, rather than a block of color.

Now you can take the Smudger brush to your lower lid and echo what you just did on top: first grab some Matte White and bring it down from the inner corner along your inner lower lash line, right about half way around your eye. This will brighten and visually enlarge your eye. Then do the same on your outer corner with Lavender Shale, smudging a soft, blurry line under your lower lid to about one-third to one-half way around your eye. I love defining my eyes this way as it’s softer than a bold, dark line, and tends to look fresher and brighter for daytime. It also distracts from undereye bags! Win-win!

Now line your upper lash line with Matte Black on the Eyeliner Brush. Experiment with a dry line or a liquid line to strike your perfect balance of casual or drama. Finish your eyes off with a coat of your favorite mascara and you’re set!

Our Pinky Pink Blush coordinates perfectly with these cool neutral colors; apply it to the apples of your cheeks with our silky soft Chubby Blender Brush.

Makeup Monday: Rosanna Answers Reader Questions

BeeyoutifulSkin Questions and Answers

BeeyoutifulSkin Questions and AnswersEvery now and then we’ll get a question from a BeeyoutifulSkin makeup user about how to better use our products. While we love to answer these questions directly via email, we thought that several of you might have the same questions, so every now and then we’ll compile your questions and do a Q&A post… and a video, because I think visual examples are super helpful, wouldn’t you agree?

So without further ado, let’s jump right in and answer some questions!

  • Q: I’m looking for a safe, preservative-free, lead-free lipstick. You carry Lip Shimmers, which I love for everyday use, but they are lighter than what I’d like for special occasions.
    • A: We are currently working on formulating richly-pigmented lipsticks! But in the meantime, did you know that you can use any of our blushes or pink eyeshadows as lipsticks? Just apply some BALM, then using a small, flat brush (like our Small All-Over Brush) dab a bit of your desired color (try Matte Pink for a soft, neutral pink) onto your lips, and mix it with the balm to create a lipstick-like color right on your lips. You can vary the intensity of the color easily by adding more or less powder as desired. You can even combine colors to get your own custom shade!
  • Q: How do I get better coverage with the foundation as a concealer for covering blemishes and dark spots?
    • A: The most effective approach to covering a specific spot on otherwise clear skin is to 1) layer the product, and 2) use several techniques. First, on freshly cleansed & moisturized skin, apply an extra dab of moisturizer on the area where you need heavier coverage. Then, using a small brush (our Small All-Over Brush is perfect!), grab up some dry foundation and stamp it directly on the spot. Now apply your foundation as you normally would, using either our Dry Buff, Airbrushed, or Liquid Foundation techniques. If you find that you still need additional coverage (or as a touch-up throughout the day), dab a bit more dry foundation directly on the spot. I find that layering like this gives not only heaver coverage, but also increases the staying power of the foundation.
  • Q: How can I  get my makeup to last longer in heat/humidity?
    • A: Heat and humidity are the enemy of beauty queens the world over! It’s currently in the 100º+ temps where I live, so I feel your pain! When it’s super hot like this, I tend toward as little makeup as possible (check out our No-Makeup Makeup Look tutorial!) both for comfort and so I don’t end up with eyeliner on my cheeks, for example. That said, to help your makeup “beat the heat”, it really helps to apply it on freshly cleansed skin, and if you don’t have dry skin, it might also help to forgo your moisturizer altogether. I primarily use the Dry Buff Method to apply my foundation in the summer, as the dry minerals naturally absorb the oils in the skin, creating a bond that will help it last longer than it would if applied with moisture.
  • Q: If I cannot find a good match for my makeup; can I just mix two colors?
    • I think mixing two makeup colors is a great idea to get your perfect, custom match! I do this frequently at the changing of the seasons; in the spring and early summer I add a bit of my “summer color” to my “winter color” as my skin deepens with sun exposure, and I do the reverse in the Fall as my skin lightens back to my lighter winter color. If, after trying our foundation samples, you find that you fall in between colors, you may choose to purchase one of each and mix up a batch of your own custom color that will last you a while so you don’t have to mix it up every time you want to wear it. Another idea is to use just a bit of your bronzer to deepen your foundation, or, if you have *very* fair skin, you could add a bit of our Matte White Base to lighten your foundation and get a more exact match for your skin tone.
  • Q: How often should I clean my makeup brushes? With what?
    • A: I always wipe my brushes off on a clean cloth between colors, or when I’m done applying makeup for the day. To deep clean, I wash my brushes every week or so using a mild, clear shampoo. Fill a cup with warm water and a pea-sized amount of shampoo, put your brushes in head-down and swirl around. Let soak for 30 minutes or so. Then take each one out and swirl around in your hand individually with warm water and a dab more shampoo. Rinse with *bristles pointing down* until the water runs clear. Squeeze gently and lay on a towel to dry overnight. Ta-da… clean brushes!

Makeup Monday: Six Versatile Ways to Use Mineral Eyeshadow

six Versatile Ways To Use Mineral Eyeshadow from BeeyoutifulSkin.com

Did you know that our mineral shadows can be applied in several different ways? You’d think that what you see is what you get, but that’s not true! There are a few different techniques and application methods that all give different looks; these shadows are really super versatile!

1. Dry

This is the most common application method for eyeshadow in general, and ours is no different. For this method, use a clean, dry makeup brush (no q-tips or sponge applicators!). Tap a little shadow out into the lid of the container, then swirl your brush around to work the makeup into the bristles. Tap off any excess back into the lid, then using a stamping motion, apply to your eyelids. The effects range from barely-there color, to intense and rich, depending on how much product you use.

#MakeupMonday: Six Versatile Ways To Use Mineral Eyeshadow from BeeyoutifulSkin.com2. Foiled

Foiling eyeshadow gives you a much different look than a dry application method! The color turns out much more saturated and shimmery, and it’s generally a more intense look. You’d be surprised how much different your colors can look when using a foiled color as opposed to dry!

To foil, start by tapping out some shadow into the lid, then dampen your brush with water (not too much; you’re going for a thin paste consistency) and coat your brush with color. Then apply to your lids in a smooth, “painting” motion, keeping your lid closed until the shadow dries.

It’s harder to blend using this technique; the shadow generally stays right where you put it. I typically use this on my lids, then use a darker shadow to blend in my crease, creating a smoky edge between the foiled shadow on my lids and my brow bone highlight. Very glam!

3. Eyeliner

Did you know that any of our dark shadows can be used as eyeliners? You can use them dry for a soft, smudgy, smoky line, or you can apply them wet for a dramatic liquid liner look.

To start, tap out a little of your liner color into the container lid, then for the dry look, swirl your liner brush into the shadow, and be sure to tap off the excess well. Start at the outer corner of your eye with the point of the angled brush toward the corner. Set the brush right above your lashes and just wiggle it back and forth a bit, keeping the brush in contact with your lid. Pick it up, and repeat the little wiggle all across your lid until you reach the point you want to stop your liner. If you are not taking your line all the way into the inner corner of your eye, you’ll want to taper it off softly rather than stop it abruptly. Repeat the same on your lower lids.

For a liquid liner application, you’ll want to dampen your brush slightly before swirling it in your liner color. Don’t get too much water, as this will dilute the color too much and you’ll end up with a faint line instead of richly pigmented line. (Think of turning your shadow into a paste, rather than making colored water in the lid.)

The application technique for liquid liner is basically the same as for dry liner; you just may want to drag your brush a tad rather than wiggle it to create a smooth line. Once you get the hang of it, applying liner with a brush is SO MUCH EASIER than dragging a waxy pencil across your lids, resulting in a crooked or lopsided line.

And don’t be afraid to experiment with color! Matte Black and Rich Earth are the basics, but you can also try Navy ShineDeep Plum, or even Pure Gold for some real pizzaz! Really, any shadow can be used as a liner… play around!

4. Lip Color

Powdered lip color? You bet! Because our shadows are nothing but minerals, they are completely safe to use as lip color, plus, they mix really well with oil-based lip balms for a smooth, even finish.

All you have to do is apply a colorless lib balm (like our All-Natural Lip Moisturizer to your clean lips, then using our Small All-Over Brush, pick up some of your color, and sweep it onto your lips. The shadow will mix with the balm to create a lipstick-like finish right on your lips.

Technically, you can use any shadow or blush color for this, but if I were you I’d stick with the rosy-hued ones (unless you WANT to look like Kesha, that is! And if you do, hey, I’m not stopping you!).

5. Highlight

In our Contour and Highlight video, I showed you how to use our Champagne Pearl eyeshadow as a cheek highlight. As a recap, all you have to do is dust a little dab of the shadow along the upper ridge of your cheekbones to accentuate your bone structure. You can use our Flat Brush, our Large All-Over Brush, or even your good ol’ fingers!

6. Brow Fill

In my experience, 99% of women need to do at least a little bit of eyebrow shaping and/or filling. This is especially true as we age (sad, I know!), since we tend to lose fullness in our brows. To pick a brow color, you’ll want go just a shade lighter than your actual brows for the most natural look. Apply with our Angled Eyeliner Brush with the grain of hair growth. Following the natural line of the brow, work the color all the way down to the skin; this will ensure your color lasts all day and looks the most natural.

Honorable mention goes to using Matte White as an additive to our fairest foundation colors if you have extremely light skin and even the lightest foundations are still too dark for you. Add in a little Matte White to get just the right shade that works for you skin.

So, you can see how versatile our eyeshadows can be, with just a little bit of creativity! Have you experimented with any of these techniques… or come up with one of your own? Share in the comments or on Facebook!
